2nd Annual NoVA Meet & Greet 9/16/06

Me and another TDR had started to form a Roanoke based local chapter this past summer. It was intended to take in folks that can't find the time to get up to Northern Va or Maryland for the chapter up that way. We figured that it could accomodate the US 220, I-81, I-77 and US 460 corridors. I live up on the mountain in Floyd and he is down in Troutville, but works in Salem. Roanoke seemed to be a good central base.

Anyway, I got swamped with work, my step dad got real sick and I was going to WVa a lot, all the while tearing out and putting in a new kitchen. I lost my drive to get this thing going and now I'm starting to see some daylight. We got approval from TDR and they even listed us in the last magazine. I have never started anything up like this, but am going to give it a try. If you would like to have a club that would serve our area of the country, and especially if you'd like to help get it going, please drop me a line at tugboatphil AT yahoo.com

The other founder works at the only authorized Bosch injection pump shop in the area, and we do have some contact with the Cummins Atlantic shop in Roanoke. So the prospects for some type of maintenance related event is in this area.

I'm a 1st Generation guy, so don't know how many of you 2nds and 3rds are out there. You all would no doubt make up the majority of members. But I see too many CTDs running around the area to not think that we could have a pretty good sized club. So think about it and let me know.

Well, there is me in Blacksburg, another TDR member (Don't know him, just have seen TDR badge on the truck here in town), Neal (Fest3er) in Salem, and Preston (DieselRam) in Roanoke.

There is also Dave Fritz (dodgeram.org webmaster) and his wife here on the VT campus.

Thanks for the reply. I have also gotten a PM from a TDR over in Forest, by Lynchburg. I guess the first step would be to plan a date for a get together, and select a place. We could then post flyers at our local diesel pumps and parts stores. What do you think?

Oh yeah, if you read this and know of anyone else in the area, please direct them to this post. Thanks again.

Thanks, guys! Phil & I were wondering if we'd get any response at all, or if anyone would be interested. I can't help but think that with as many as you see around the valley and beyond, that some folks would like to "meet & greet" and have a get together occasionally. I think we should have some sort of meeting of folks and get organized, and then we can plan our strategy to spread the word with some sort of notices at the Dealers, repair facilities, auto parts stores, etc... in the area. Which one (if any) of the members listed above is in or started the Diesel Drag Racing Association (pardon the incorrect name if it is) in Salem, VA?

That would be Neal Murphy (Fest3er) -- email address removed --, and its the Diesel Hot Rod Association. I will talk to him when he, Eric McBride, myself, and a few others are tending the DHRA booth at SEMA about all getting together.

Preston, Neal, and I met a few months ago in Salem for dinner one night. We need to do something like that again.

GREAT! Sounds like a plan. Phil & I had just talked about picking a place that we could have enough parking for a bunch of noisy, smokin' trucks to park, and we should get together during daylight hours so we could view the trucks and converse. We should also be near the major highways so that everyone who wants to come could find us easily. I'm working on talking to some of the local establishments in the Roanoke-Salem area. If you have suggestions, feel free to send them to me.

I look forward to meeting you folks! :)

Hey Phil! Sorry about your Dad; I hope he's gotten better.

Dan pointed me to this thread. Sorry I can't add much right now. I'm *still* swamped with DHRA work, and I'm getting stuff ready to drive out to Vegas for SEMA.

GT, do you work at Blue Ridge Diesel?

Besides the folks on this thread, I know there are at least another 5 TDR members in the general area. There's also an Amsoil dealer with a hopped-up Cummins here.

Contact Clayton at:

Clayton's Automotive Services

1371 Southside Dr

Salem, VA 24153-4603

Phone: (540) 387-9058

He moved (in the past couple years) to a facility with a lot more space, inside and outside, and he was talking about buying a dyno. Last time I talked with him, he wasn't against hosting a dieselhead gathering.

Neal

Since there does seem to be potential to get this thing running, I would appreciate it if you would send me your email address so I can contact everyone at the same time. I guess I shouldn't have put my email on the previous post since the spammers get them that way. So send your address to tugboatphil AT yahoo.com

You know,of course, to convert AT to @ in my address. Just checking ;)

Sorry to be slow to reply. I have been out of town for a couple of days, and didn't take my laptop. Yes, I am at Blue Ridge Diesel in Salem. I am glad to see so many folks willing to start a local chapter. Hope we can get this thing rolling! You can reach me at gwtobey AT ntelos.net if you need to email me or you can PM me here...

Potential location for Meet, Greet, and Eat, and whatever...

Phil and I were looking around the Roanoke, VA area to locate a place to accomodate those who want to come, and to provide room to park our trucks and wander through peering at each one, etc... We thought about the Western Sizzlin' at the old Crossroads Mall, near the intersection of Williamson Road and Hershberger Road. There is a big parking lot, and maybe we could get together for a while on Saturday, November 12th at 1:00pm. The next Saturday, November the 19th could also be in the running if it is not too close to Thanksgiving... .

I'm going to contact the folks @ WS today and see if we can meet there. Does this agree with folks? Let me know ASAP... .

Hopin' to see y'all...

Sounds like a good time! Unfortunately, I will be signing a contract on a house that day. I will hook up with Phil later.

SEMA was awesome!

Neal (Fest3er) will be in Houston that weekend, so he won't be able to attend.

Well i guess im in the area. . im 2hrs out from Roanoke at the minimum, would love to be part of this, but Nov. 12 im at work so no dice for me next saturday. I know i am also busy with other projects, hopefully soon will have my new engine in my deuce M35 so im focusing on that along with work and the farm here...

Another location for a future meet could be Jimmy V's on Brandon Ave in Roanoke. They have room to park a lot of trucks, and have a large 'back' dining room that can hold lots of people. If we have enough, we can reserve it for a private party, or just reserve enough tables for the group.

They have *really* good sammiches, pizza and other food at very reasonable prices. And they have beer, wine and, I think, liquor.

I won't be back in time for the 12th, but I should be able to attend events scheduled for later.

And yes, SEMA was a good show this year.

Hey guys sorry i missed this thread. I hate I missed the meet and greet, How did it go? We should get another one together sometime soon. I vote for Jimmy V's. Great food, I ride motorcycles with Jimmy so maybe he could hook us up on some discounts. Let me know.
