Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Swap 12cm housing for 16cm non-wg-- step forward or backward?

I guess what I'm REALLY asking is which housing flows more, a 16 non-wg or a 12 WG?

Does the housing size account for the wg? So, would a 14wg maybe outlfow a 16 non-wg?

At my fueling level (see sig), the 12cm housing is WAY too small, and it's just killing the top end. I think I have spoolup to spare, so I'm looking at a larger housing.

Right now, boost zooms up to 31 psi and just chokes there.

I want to do this for cheap, so I'm looking for the non-wg 16 first.

How easy is the housing swap? Do I have to move the stock DP forward/backward as hinted on HTT's website? What do I need to make this fit?

Surely someone has swapped housings on the 35 a couple times!

remember, a wastegated housing only wastegates the back three cylinders. it does "even out" to an extent, but not totally...



one thing, when you say "chokes off"... have you tried blocking off the wastegate completely to see how much boost you can make?

I'm a relativly new diesel novice but I did swap my 12 cm housing for a 14 cm wg Kwik Spool. It wasn't to difficult. The biggest problem I had was seperating the old housing from the center section & yes, I had to remove the whole turbo & exhaust brake, but the down pipe stays in the same position. I did port the housing & manifold as per Dave's instruction on NW BOMBERS. It seems to spool even faster than the stock 12 cm unit. I could only guess at the rest of your questions, but I'd bet the 16 would sacrifice some spool time.

It's more of a "feel" thing. Once I get past about 23-25psi, giving it more pedal makes more boost come up, but doesn't really increase rate of acceleration.

I'm also thinking that they sized the stock housing on the tight size for driveability and spoolup, and this only at 245hp. How I'm about 130hp over that, and there's no way the housing can be right.

Can I "block off" the WG just by putting some small vise-grips on the rubber hose that goes from the boost elbow to the the WG actuator? That boost elbow is just 1/8" NPT, right?

Maybe a needle valve would be ideal in that fitting, as I could tailor the WG opening?

Justin, TDR member Don Troxel sells adjustable boos elbows for about $15. He has had them listed on the classified ads on this site. Yes it's 1/8 NPT. Blocking your waste gate will only increase your back pressure & any additional boost thus gained won't help you. At least that's how it's been explained to me.

What's the best way to covert from a WG housing to a non-wg in terms of DP? Isn't there a cheap way to do this, like a little DP adapter or something?

Looks like I may be stuck doing a 14WG housing if I want to do this more simply (even if not cheaper).

I think I'm going to look into a huge external gate to alleviate my backpressure since this isn't the easy swap I was hoping for.

If you can swing it do a 14 Waste Gated. Just drill and champfer (spl) a hole to waste all six cylinders. A 14 WG will out flow a 16 non wg. I have tried both and the 14 is hands down better.

The 16 is was a pain in the rear to hook up the exhaust pipe. You have to pull the whole exhaust system about 1. 5" forward. It is a must to have more then on set of hands.

Thats funny,

I took my 14 WG housing off and put on a 16 NON WG housing and it used a similiar elbow that was v band clamped on instead of bolted to the back of the housing.

I still have the elbow laying around in my garage somewhere. If you want to see a picture of it.

The make the non wastegated housing in 14 and 16, but if you were going to go with the non wastegated route I would go with the 16 if the 14 w/g housing is too $. Also the 14 and the 16 non wg housing bolt to the above elbow via band clamp. I hope this helps...
