2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Swap 3:54 for 3:73 gears in 1999??

Can I get 3:73 gears for my 99 4X4. If so, where? Any good shops in Long Island?

Hi, Harry; yes, 3. 73s are available for your truck. Any competent differential shop can do the work, as can some of the diesel shops.



I did a google search on 'dana 70u' and came up with lots of hits. One of the sites was:

You might want to consider the minimal payback going from 3. 54 to 3. 73. It ain't much, considering what you are going to pay to change both front and rear gearsets. If you feel that you need more gear, you might as well go to 4. 10s. Auto trucks work fine with 4. 10s, especially when used for 'speed limit' towing and/or with bigger tires.



Yeah, I know: I have 3. 54s in my truck, but that WILL change!

I did it...........

Mine is only 2X but the change will be the same. It is minimal but with the utility bed I'm stuck with that weight and it is the perfect gear for a mix of town and freeway.



The utility bed also stopped me from doing a tire size change which would have been easier. Although putting 6 new Michelin XPS ribs on the truck cost me more than the gear swap. Way more.



Remember when going from a 4 series gear to a 3 series the carrier will also have to be swapped. If you have 3:54's your good to go.
