Switching heads

Just got my new engine and did the timing.

This may cause a small thread war but how many changes would need to be made to put a 12 valve 5. 9l where a 24 valve 5. 9l is? I won't bore you all with reasons WHY someone would do this ('cause many will agree and many will disagree) but are the two engines realy much different from the transplant point of view? The 24v still uses a throttle cable (at least the 99's do). Sensors are the concern that pops into mind. Any thing else?

getting the PCM and gauges to work might be fun, I'm not sure how much changed in the 98 models when they changed the motors over I "Think" that the gauge cluster was the same in all the 98's at least they seem to all have the LCD od on them and the same layout.

Engine change 24 for 12

I have no idea exactly what would be involved in swapping a 24 for a 12 but you would deffinatelly have to switch to mechanical gauges since the 24's have electric guages run by the pcm. Other than that I would think that going to a pure mechanical pump setup would be an extremelly easy swap. As a matter of fact I would be more than glad to take that 24 off your hands since I'm currently debating on replacing the 12 in my old dually with a 24, so If you need a place to dump that old useless carcass of an engine I'd be glad to haul it off for you!!!

24 to 12

I have been thinking about the other way and would it be cheaper to do the swap to the P7100 conversion or do the complete engine swap. I have no intent in starting a war, I just wont a long lasting pump, and very little electronics.

thanks Jimk

it would be cheaper to swap the motors you could sell your 24 valve motor and get close to the amount required to buy another good 12 valve ( maybe even more if your a good trader)

The other way, you have to buy the pump $$$$ a cam $$$ make the fuel lines, and I think that you will have to change the pump gear and maybe the front housing too, and lastly buy a mechanical lift pump your left with the electric pump used to sell and used they are not really $$$ you might be able to sell your ECM too, But most people that would want a ECM want the Cummins ECM ( I know that I do:)
