I don't do hardly any hauling at all. The most I've ever hauled was a big water container for a well. I mostly bought the truck because of mileage, performance, and because I LOVE Cummins. My truck right now is a three speed auto. On the highway, going 70 mph, it sounds like the engine is really running high. I don't have a tach (one of the many things i need to get), so I'm not sure how high it's actually running. All i know is for long drives, I want to keep the rpm's down. I think a five speed would also help with mileage and performance. Is it worth switcing it to a five speed, or is there something else I could do to get the same effect? Thanks.

I've got the same problem. I was wondering if a 518 would swap right in, or if I would have to do serious modifications.

Josh, you may want to check the rear end ratio. You truck may have the 4:10, if so it would probably be cheaper to switch to the 3:54.

You need to look into installing a gear vendor, We just finished rebuilding my 89 D250 from a salvage truck, to another 89 D250, swaped motor, trans (rebuilt 3 speed 727 trans) added the gearvendor and used my 3:08 open rear end.
I used to run 70 mph and pull 2450 rpm and know at 70 I am pulling 2000. Truck runs like a Swiss rolex.
Look at what your rear gear ratio is, it should be on a tag attached to your Dana 70 cover bolts.
Email for more info. I also have a couple
Mopar tach kits for the 89-91 #82201051 that I may be selling in the future.
