2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission swap Dana 70 for Dana 80

I'm buying a 99 quad cab auto to replace my 97 reg cab 5spd. I want to put the Dana 80 in the 99 before I sell the 97. Does anyone know if the universal joints are the same size? I figure the 80 probably uses a larger joint, but I'm not sure. Thanks. Todd

Somebody has to know if I can unbolt these rears and swap them or will I have to get new driveshafts made up?

PM Jim Fuller, (CUMINNTSTRKN) he did this swap, he'll know all the details. I "think", you'll need to shorten the drive-shaft anyway, because the 80 is larger and sits forward a touch more.

I've never heard of the driveshaft needing to be shortened

What do you do with the dually wheels? Do you use one of the rear wheels on each axle shaft?

Sorry, I should have said that both trucks are 2500's. The 5speeds have the Dana 80, where as the auto's use the Dana 70.

I figure in order to swap the rears, I'll need to get new driveshafts made. I'm not sure that's true, that's why I started this post. I thought somebody would have done this swap already, and had the answer I'm looking for. Todd
