Quick History... .
I installed a SPS 66 last fall and I really, really liked it as long as I wasn't towing... Ya, it would bark, but the rush of boost was intoxicating... However, the surge was too much when I was towing in 4th and locked up. With my tires, I had to run almost 80 to keep above the surge at 1900 rpms.
To make it clear, when unloaded, I didn't have any surge with the SPS 66, but I've been towing about 7k twice a week lately and it just got to be too much (the wife asked what's wrong with my truck), so I gave Shane a call at Industrial and he said that I should go to the Super 62. I really fought "downgrading" in size since that would imply some sort of reduced manhood, but I knew I'd be towing more, so I just bit the bullet and put it on last week.
The verdict????
Absolutely the best thing I could have done:
-NO SURGE AT ALL!!!
-Spool up is definitely quicker (a passenger noticed it today all on his own)
-Way less bark on shifts
-Less turbo whine through my intake (the 66 was almost too much... almost)
-Almost as quick when building boost from 20 to 50 psi as the SPS 66 (almost)
The EGTs are a bit higher while towing when dumping in the fuel. With the 66, I didn't see over 1500 no matter how much I turned up the TST, now I can see 1600, but by the time they get that hot, I'm doing over 95 up hill and that's a bit scary towing over 7k, so it's a non-issue.
When unloaded, the EGTs don't get that hot before I hit the speed limiter or run out of road, so it's not a big deal. Actually, the limiting factor when unloaded is that I'm running out of fuel before I get too hot.
So, will I go back? Until I can get more fuel through the common rail, there's no point. I have quicker spool up, no surge, quieter intake, less compaints from the wife, and it looks like better mileage (almost a tank through it), even if the surge went away on the 66, I'd probably stick with the 62 just for the quicker spool-up alone.
Just my 2 cents, but I want to say thanks to Industrial Injection. They've helped me out on several things before and this is just one more time they've shown they know their stuff. (no, I'm not on the payroll)
Oh, one more observation... with the injectors, I prefer the TST over the Hot Juice... more adjustability and less smoke at low boost with the TST. I have them stacked, but only run one at a time. . can't double advance the timing or it's a nasty knock :-laf
