We have a 98 1/2 3500 5 speed work truck that has a blown 53 block engine. Rather than rebuild a 53 block we decided to try and find a replacement engine. I found a complete engine taken from a wrecked 2001 truck including the computer. Will the 2001 work in a 98 1/2 truck and what do we need to replace? I have some knowledge about these engines but certainly not an expert. I have heard the early engines have both a Cam Position Sensor and a Crank Position Sensor. Can we replace the computer along with the engine problem free? Are the connectors the same? I have heard the 2000 and newer engines only have a Cam Position Sensor and no Crank Position Sensor.

I would really appreciate some assistance.

It will bolt in and as long as the VP is the same rating, HO vs SO, the existing harness\ECU will hook up and make it work. The question on the cam sensor and crank sensor is a good one that I don't know the answer to. I want to say early 24V had the crank sensor at the back then it moved to the front later but its been too long since I had a 98 to work on.

JLandry should know this by heart, we will wait for his input to fill in the gaps. :D

Thanks for your input. After sleeping on this I think the only way this is going to work is to go with the ECU that came with the 01 engine. We own a salvage business so if the existing 01 computer is an HO I can get A SO computer. I will need to have the computer reprogrammed anyway, I think, to accept the VIN ETC... . correct? Can the computer only be programmed at the dealership?

It looks like I have stumped the experts! I thought this would be an easy question. Apparently it is not or the right person has not seen this tread. If anyone knows anyone I can contact to receive a response please respond. Sounds like JLandry is an expert if you are available please help!!
