Picked up an Allison AT 542, now I need your opinion

Anyone need a 92 W250

How have those who have done a conversion addressed this potential show stopper? I've read where a 4bt was swapped into a '91 Wrangler and a '91 Dakota. I have a 88 Dakota which is crying for a replacement for its V6. Putting a 4bt in there would be a great project, but I can't imagine the EPA giving a green light to it. To drive a converted vehicle on public roads in N. Va. unfortunately I would have to get their "blessing".

I know that if one stays with a gas engine, as long as the new powerplant is of the same, or newer emmisions year as the target vehicle, you are usually OK. Diesels are a different animal, particularly when the subject engine has never appeared in a light duty configuration in this country.

I know this is different than the situation your talking about (older motor in a newer vehicle). But when I took the burb through emissions they made me conform to the emission standards of the year of the motor not the year of the vehicle. I bet that if I had a vehicle that was newer than the motor they would have me conform to the year of the vehicle! Like Joe said, talk to your state emissions board. The laws are probably different than here in Arizona.

i called my local authorities and they said once you convert to a diesel, you have to get a state inspection that will prove the conversion and then you will officially be EXEMPT from emmissions

cool huh? thats my story and i'm stickin to it
