I plan on swapping out the OEM AM/FM/cassette in my 96 truck with a unit out of a 2002 that is an infinity AM/FM/CD/cassette. I am doing the unit and speakers. Have any of you done this swap before? Any problems or recommendations?

Thanks in advance.....

Doug

I just did the same thing in my truck. I had an Infinity system with just am/fm/cassette and swapped in a am/fm/cassete/cd from a Dakota sport. I didn't change any speakers, just the radio.

You have two screws for the cup holder, two screws for the ash tray thing, you can pull the dash. The dash pops right out but you have to lower your tilt steering all the way and disconnect the power outlet.

Now you can pull out your radio after removing the two screws that hold that, unplug the antenna, two plugs for the radio stuff, and one ground wire.

Reverse to put it all back together.

It took me about 7 minutes from start to finish (not counting getting tools together).

Ok the radio is out... ... But the plugs on the back of the radios is different. A local stereo shop is looking into getting me some plugs to try and make an adapter. Anyone else had this problem?

there may be an issue

Doug,

The Infinity unit is a preamp only unit... I believe. The Infinity system in our trucks have seperate AMP's for the speakers. When I replaced my factory unit I had to tap the blue OEM wire to trigger the seperate AMP's.

I could be wrong in your case but that was my experience.

Hope this helps... :)

Re: there may be an issue

I think the Infinity radio puts out just the same amount of power as the lower priced radios.

The difference in power is the amps on the speakers.

If these amps were "low level" input, then any of us that have replace the Infinity radio with an aftermarket radio, and left the amps in the doors, would have smoked them as soon as we turned on the new radio.

I think these amps in the infinity system are a couple watts in, and many watts out (not sure how many though).

There is a guy on these boards that works for the factory that makes most of the Dodge Radios, he would know the answer for sure if he happens to see this post.

UPDATE???

Did we find out if a non-infinity radio could be put into a truck with the infinity system in it? I found a heck of a deal on a radio that is out of a non infinity truck. Just wondering if I should buy it.
