To those who have swiss cheesed there air box, did you cut holes all the way around the box or just towards the front. Does doing this make a noticable difference ? I wonder if this would bring in as much air as the BHAF if one run the k&n with the swiss cheesed air box?

swiss cheese

 Very good question. I drilled 12 1and1\4" holes from the top forward and down to see if this will help the kn breathe. I went around the outside with a heavy 1\4mesh screen to keep out the rodents, will see how it works, then decide on the bhaf. I'm concerned about the lack of an inner mesh screen on the inside of the filter. Tim

Here's another option, I can't say how it compares to anything but stock airbox but it does work noticeably better (lower egts by approx 50 degrees). What I did was drill a 3" hole in the front of the airbox and a 3" hole in the body panel behind the headlight (between the headlight and the turn signal) it is pretty much a straight shot if you drill the holes in the right place, then I used a piece of my old 3" exhaust tube to connect the holes. I think you could go bigger but the next size holesaw I had was 4 1/2" and it was to big. I just used a little piece of angle iron poprivited to the tube and the air box to locate the tube on the back end and I filed the hole out in the metal so that the tube slid through with some tape wrapped around it to keep it from rattling. Now I get cooler air than by just swiss cheesing the box.

Just another option that really doesn't cost anything.

I drilled about 8 2" holes in the area under the inner fender - to prevent water from getting in. I can feel and hear the difference - yes it's a little noisier than stock but worth it. :)

Happy trails

BHAF & Smoky Mnt.

Hey rdodd!:)

I just removed my "Swiss Cheese Airbox" and K&N two weeks ago and installed the BHAF on a "Old Smoky" Mount. There is no comparison between the two..... The BHAF is superior in every respect especially when mounted on the "Old Smoky" Mount! I dropped my EGT by 150* F instantly and gave couple more #'s of boost. Sweet setup!

I would have never believe a air filter could make such a difference... . Until I witnessed it myself. There will probably be many Swiss Cheesed Airbox / K&N combos in the TDR Classifieds in the near future.

I wouldn't drill out an OEM airbox when you just ask a TDR First Gen'er for the old one for the cost of shipping. I'm not planning on going back anytime soon.

A Better Way

You guys must be tryin' to get me to try one of these famous BHAF/Smoky Mounts. With all of the $$$ I've been spending lately, whats a little more. In Columbus at the TDR Nationals, I bought a ATS 3-piece manifold, finally got it yesterday and its NOT drilled for my pryo:mad: !!!, also it doesn't come with a gasket (Manifold to head) I need to e-mail them. At Diesel Extravaganza I had to order a pair of Fast Coolers, haven't got them yet. I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

I'm almost seeing a BHAF in my future, 150* KEENO, I like the sound of that!:D

I was wondering where I could get one of these "Smoky Mounts?" Do you have to make it yourself or is someone selling these? I am ready to convert to the BHAF.

I know I am not supposed to be selling stuff in this section, but I can make you, or anyone else, one. If you, or they, would like. :D Just let me know. If you want to see pictures, just go to "Old Smoky's Rig" under the "readers rigs" section.

 Hey fellas, you can find the pitcures and all the info on the mount,(60. 00) if you use your search feature and type in bhaf and that is all you do and scan till it comes up. It is pretty interesting, however I think that a screen either in the filter or one fabed in the cone of the mount would be a good idea. I checked at Napa today with my discount the filter is 17. 00 part number 2790. While in town I got some 3" alum dryer hose that expands to 8 feet and a mount for the core support next to the radiator. On the drivers side, there is a hole that I can catch air and route it over to the swissed air box for outside forced air. The same hole on the passenger side has some air cond lines filling it up. Will see how this helps, however am not opposed the bhaf. The element when in its mount is unprotected from rodents. But a 1\4" mesh screen could be wrapped around it pretty easily. Just a thought. Later, Tim
