Well I went down to the local Oil dist. and bought a case of Valvoline prem. blue extreme 5W/40. Cost $69 out the door. Worked to about $4/Qt. I plan on going like 10,000 per oil change on normal filter. With this better oil, how long is the max for an oil filter? I hardly get into dusy areas and drive hwy and streets. Although a lot of my driving is stop and go on surface streets.

Right now the city milage is around 16 or so MPG and 20-21 hwy. I am going on a trip 2 weeks from yesterday (19th) to So. Ca. and I will see if the new oil makes a difference in MPG's

Eric, I go 20,000 miles on an oil change and use 3 Stratapores in that time, so it comes out to a little under 7000 miles per filter.

I am considering backing off to 15,000 mile changes and two filters.

I am running Delvac 1

Eric, I go 15000 between changes with filters at 5 and 10000 I sample every 15000. I use amsoil. If you buy a 55 gal drum it works out to $2. 97 a quart. Also use fleetguard 3894. Just rolled 210000 So far so good

Once just for grins, I went ~10k between oil filter changes. On that sample, I saw increases in iron, aluminum, and lead that were much higher than I've seen in the past, even after I accounted for the higher mileage and "pro-rated" the numbers.

It could have been a "fluke" in the data, but based on what I saw, I now change the full flow filter at 5k intervals. If I get busy and need to run out to 6k or even 7. 5k, no big deal, but I won't stretch past 7500 again.

Eric; you should have the check by now; looking forward to getting your winter fronts and the cubby hole plate soon. :)

I am running Amsoil 15W40. I change my oil at 6K mile intervals. I do live in a dusty area so I change my filter at 3K mile intervals. My driving falls into the severe catagory on several matters 1) dusty enviro 2) short distances 3) stop and go traffic.

I got a long road trip from San Diego to Virginia and back starting next week. I may not change the filter during that trip but then I wont be in the dusty desert regions most of that trip.

Andy

Eric,

I wouldn't go more than 5k your first interval. The new oil needs to clean out all of the old oil and additives before it will be 100% effective.

After that, I would initally use oil analysis to determine your oil change interval. I would imagine 10k or even 15k would be no problem, but I have not seen too much info on the PB Extreme so I personally would test it to see how it is holding up before extending it too long.

One more thing, many guys have reported buying this at NAPA, special order only at most, for $11. 72/gallon. IMO $4/quart is a little too spendy for a group III synthetic, but if you shop around you should be able to find a little better price on it. (Note: I haven't checked NAPA, but Cummins Michigan wanted around $17/gallon  )

Last oil analysis on my (old 94') was taken 7-30-02, and had 41,000 on the amsoil 5W-30 HDD oil. (Fe) 76 (Cr) 21 (Pb) 9 (Cu) 3

(Sn) 2 (Al) 10. VIS @100 C 11. 9 Soot 1. 2% TBN 12. 2. Remarks said "Oil is suitable for continued use", change "Full Flow" oil filter, if not done when sampled, top off system and re-sample at the next regular interval.

Truck now belongs to a fellow TDR member, as I now have the 03' "Laramie 2500 with 6-speed 4-door.
