Switching to synthetic, have a few ?s

Hi all, My truck is about to hit 100K, I ordered Amsiol for the engine, front and rear diff, 6 speed transmission and t-case. I got this one with 84K on it and have no idea if the gearboxes were ever changed.

I have done some sherching but can not find the answers to all my questions.

Since I have not crawled under the truck yet does any one know what size transmission and T-case pugs are? Im thinking metric allen larger than I have. Do the front and rear diff have a reuseable gasket, (I thought the rear did) Any other special wrenchs needed for this job?

I plan on returning from a long drive and pull her into the shop and drain evey thing over night and the next morn start the refill. I do plan on removing transmission side plate to clean and look it over, is there a magnit in there? Or were could I get one localy.

front and rear diff gaskets are reuseable, the plug on the t-case is metric #6 allen i think.

Play it safe and have a tube of silicone on hand just in case the diff gaskets are damaged. If the fluids were changed it's possible silicon was used to seal the covers.

I believe the trans is a 14MM allen and the transfercase is an 8MM allen.

Remove the FILL PLUG(s) first, as the fill plugs sometimes seize, leaving you no option to refill.

There is a flat "fridge" magnet in the bottom of the trans... if you run your fingers along the bottom of the case, you should feel it (around a 2" square).

The diff covers are reuseable, but as noted, have silicone on hand as well as a very sharp flat scraper as rust tends to form under the gasket. Both diffs have a magnet on the fill plug.

Thanks to all, My set only goes to 10MM, Have to find a larger set. It's no wonder my tool box is too small.

Thanks again all, I got every thing swicthed out. I ran engine flush before draining engine oil, wow that stuff stinks. Have not drove it very far yet but I did notice the transmission does shift easyer, it slids in and out of gear with less effert, don't know why, but I like it. The magnet was clean and all oils looked and smelled good when drained.

question for you? I was reading this thread and your comment caught my eye about the transfer case plug. You stated an 8mm plug. A few weeks ago I tried to change the fluid in the transfer case and could not loosen the fill plug. I stopped and did not butcher the plug but it did loosen up the socket a bit. I was using a 5/16(?) hex socket and it was maybe a little loose but not a lot. Now doing the math a 8mm would be . 320 and 5/16 would be . 312 not a lot but could make a diifference. I did use one of those impact screwdrivers and no go. I was thinking of using my 1/2" drive air impact but lightly not full trigger. That plug was a softer matierial and as the case is aluminum probably the plug is also. Got any suggestions? I never have used caveman tactics on things. It's sunday maybe I'll find out if NAPA has a 8mm hex.

I am pretty sure a 3/8" is loose... I rounded the one out on my dad's truck forcing a mean extraction. I think its an 8MM, I know its metric.
