Since the transfer case call for ATF I had mine switched over to Amsoil synthetic ATF,,Have had no problems with it at all. .

I have been using Dexron 3 ATF (Costco @$10/12 qt) and recommend changing every 15,000 miles.

LE has a more slippery lube that might be worth looking into. I haven't yet due to voluntary inertia :D and I have well over 100,000 miles on the t-case with no problems.

My first 171,000 miles I used the standard old Dextron ATF like Joe does. I went to the Amsoil because my pal had a few quarts lying around he did not want to use.

The Amsoil has been in for roughly 10,000 miles.

Amsoil ATF, change once a year about 25-35,000 miles, sled pulling, abuse, (meaning, I USE the hp I have)etc.

Looks new.

113,000 miles and counting!

Amsoil

I use Amsoil 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube in my transfer case. The NP 205 & 203's used gear lube. Wouldn't put ATF in them. Basically still have the same setup. Ran it also in my Dakota (113K miles), and in my other CTD. Use 85W-140 in rear, and 75W-90 in front. No Problems.

I have always thought ATF is a little light in a T-Case. What is most ATF, 10w? I think the new Amsoil ATF is 30w (or so I have been told), so I would feel more comfortable with this vs. regular ATF, if the informaiton I was given is correct.

I wonder why not gear oil? Too heavy and DC is seaching for every little tiny bit to help with their corporate fuel economy?

There are no clutches in the T-Case so it doesn't necessarily need ATF, right?

At least I'm not the only one who has wondered this, as B KIRK is running gear oil.

Anybody else have some comments on this?

Thanks,

Ryan

I have ATF +3 in the T-case for now. I know several people that are using synthetic 10w-30 motor oil in the T-case as well with no problems. I would be more comfortable with motor oil than gear oil personally. When my warranty is gone I will probably fill it with Mobil 1.

Have been using Redline MTL, synthetic manual transmission lubricant, (75W-85W) in my transfer case since new. Have also used this in the NP231 in my wife's Jeep Wrangler. Lubricates much better than ATF.
