Does anyone out there know if there are advantages such as reliability, longevity, etc. if using synthetic ATF? I've searched this for hours but cannot find this information. I notice amsoil and redline make synthetic ATF. Just looking to do what I can to help the automatic trans problems i read about. Thanks in advance.

Unless you have bombed your truck there isn't a transmission problem with the new 48re.

Synthetic ATF is "slipperier" which probably accounts for the temp drop noted above. It also have greater resistance to high temps which offers additional protection, and better flow at low temps which means better lube when cold.

That said, I have never run synthetic ATF in my trucks. I run synthetics in the diffs and t-case and dino in the trans. It is a pretty messy, or potentially messy job, to get all the old ATF out and new synthetic in. Some shops frown on mixing synthetic with dino in their ATF flushing machines. Unless you know and trust the shop you are stuck doing it yourself, that can be the messy part ;)

Not much left in those machines when done installing atf. One auto and one truck I own have Amsoil atf in them. Installed it in fair amount of customers cars/trucks wth a FLUSH machine. No worrys. No point in doing it except with a FLUSH machine. Gets it all out and all in.
