I'm sure this subject has been worn out before, but I couldn't find any threads.

I have 3 Cummins powered Dodges.

1. 2004 3500 dual rear wheel, 74,000 miles

2. 2002 3500 drw 198,000 miles

3. 2001 (24valve HO)2500 65,000 miles

Each truck runs great with tons of power and no internal problems.

I have always run Rotella 15/40 with Fleetguard or Napa Gold oil filters.

I always thought that synthetic oil was a no no in a diesel engine. Lately I have seen synthetic diesel oils being marketed by Redline and Amsoil.

Could switching to syn casue oil leaking/burning?

Also, I have seen a bypass oil filter assembly that works in conjuction with the stock filter. Anyone install one of these?

Thanks

I installed the Amsoil bmk 11 remote bypass with their new filter that is supposed to remove most of the soot. I have not gotten an oil analysis since adding this system, so can not quantify the results. I love the idea of the bypass system.

If you do not run in temperature extremes ( over 100 F, under 32F ) I would suggest running Dello 15w40. It is an outstanding dino. I broke my truck in on it before stitching to Mobil 5w40 syn. . The oil analysis results were outstanding with the Dello@

I live and drive in the Montana mountains around Big Sky. The temps get super low all the time (I can think of 5 times this winter that it was below -30).

I'm mainly concerned that I can perceive louder engine noise and less MPG after only 500-1000 miles on fresh oil. Also, the sooty oil that I change at 3,000 miles seems almost watery compared to the new oil.

You will not experience any more oil burning than you already do.

As far as leaks, Synthetic oils usually are a lot cleaner in that they clean out the crankcase. So, you can possibly develop leaks if you have a large amount of crude built up in the engine and the crud has dried out your seals. When the crud is cleaned out by the synthetic oil, the dried up seals can leak. This is only a problem on high milage vehicles that have run crap oil and not paid much attention to oil change intervals. Personally, I run Amsoil in all my trucks and everything else I have. Its never done me wrong. Do some searching and you will find a ton of info on this.

Hope this helps

I of course have the AMSOIL BMK-11 by-pass on my truck as well as using the Amsoil 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine engine oil. My last oil analysis with 45,300 miles on the oil (54,000 on the truck) showed 0. 20 percent/weight, which is VERY low soot content. Viscosity was still reading in the "NORMAL" zone.
