Hello everyone,

It's been awhile since I've posted anything. I live in north Alabama and, have recently switched to 5W40 mobil synthetic oil. My truck now has 89k miles on it and mostly trouble free, except for a couple of axle seals and injector pump (both covered under warranty). Only mod is a MBRP muffler. I guess my question is, do you guys think it is ok to use 5W40 synthetic oil here in my area? I have waited to use synthetic oil until my mileage was high because I rarely pull anything.

Thanks!

Nothing wrong with using a good synthetic! I started at 8,500 in 4-2003 and now have over 70K with great results! Of course I use Synthetic in ALL my vehicles, and have done for over 25 years.

In these Southern climates I'm kinda partial to a 15w40 in these engines. In North Dakota I'd use 5w40 in the winter. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for your replies. It's good to know that I won't be hurting anything using 5W40 however, I will be looking for the 15W40 when spring starts. Thanks again!

Run a couple crankcases worth of synthetic and see what you think. If you do pickup 1mpg it might pay for itself. Given how you run the truck, and your lack of cold temps, you don't really stand to gain a whole lot w/synthetic oil in my opinion. I run synth but mostly for the cold start properties (at 10deg its a completely different experience starting a cold truck on 5w-40 vs 15w40). I run 12kmi on a change with a filter and makeup quart at 6kmi. If your going to do 3-5kmi changes with synthetic it's wasted money. Either way, though, synthetic sure wont hurt anything.
