Synthetic Versus Conventional oil

Trying to decide whether to switch to synthetic. I have 12K and i use Rotella 15W-40 and i have the Amsoil Dual Bypass kit.

I know price is the main issue whan it comes to synthetics, but if price was not an issue, what would you use? Synthetic, or Conventional? and what brand and weight and why?. What are you using now? Anybody have any major problems with either? Lets have a poll

just do a search for synthetic oil and read some of the advantages of it. I don't think price should be an issue considering what we all paid for our trucks. I don't see why you wouldn't use it?

I have another question along these lines. I have an older Cummins and was wondering what the API Serivce requirements are for the NEW 24 VALVE MOTORS. Can someone look in their owners manual and tell me what the new service classifications is for these new Cummins engines? My old manual says CE, SG/CE but, according to API, those are obsolete now. So, I'd like to see what the new standard is. TIA... ... ... ... Racer

Hey EMDDiesel,

I've been running Amsoil 15W40 since 30,000 miles. I put in Series 2000 gear lube in both differentials, ATF in the transmission and transfer case at about 60,000 miles. My mileage went up about 1. 5 mpg (sometimes a little more, rarely any less than that) right after switching, and has stayed there since - I now have 88,000 miles. I change my oil filter at 5000 miles, and oil & filter at 10,000 miles. I'm a firm believer in synthetics. (PERSONAL OPINION ONLY - NO HARD EVIDENCE TO BACK IT UP!!!)

Racer, the newest specs are SJ/CH, which supercede all previous API testing requirements by a pretty wide margin. In other words, it is fine to use the newer oil in older engines.
