Anyone going to SEMA in Vegas?

What is the best anti-virus software?

My PC has been acting weirdly the past few weeks. I'm firewalled and AV'd to the teeth, but maybe something slipped by. Computer Associates Antivirus finds nothing as well as Ad-Aware, both of which are always up to date. When I try to do a system restore, depending on which account I'm in, safe-mode or normal, I get some type of error messsage or that I don't have sufficient privs, despite the fact I'm logged in as Administator! Any ideas?

Try going through this FAQ and see if that has cleaned anything up. If not you can ask for help in this forum. They may be able to help you out or at least point you in the right direction.

sledge hammer?

that is what i want to do to my other pc. . it is messed up pretty good right now, and tomorrow hopefully it will be going off to get fixed [under a free 2yr service contract]. . if it had come with a copy of xp on cd, i would have reformatted and reinstalled it, but cheap arse MDG company doesn't ship their pc's with the operating system on cd or even a recoevery cd. .

next pc will be built from scratch by myself [reason: if i can build it, i can fix it]

Most people I know have had excellent luck with XP. I, on the other hand, used to regularly have XP go into nuclear meltdown and have to reformat and reinstall.

This would happen 3-5 times per year. And then I banished all Symantec products from my computer (because I suspected they might be the problem). I haven't had a single problem since, and it's been over a year.

My point is that XP is not necessarily rock-solid, and I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if you simply need to wipe the machine clean and start over.

JApol,

Thanks for the links. I'll try them when I get home from work.

rbattelle,

I totally agree with the Symantic thing. I learned many years ago their stuff causes more problems than they fix. I know many others who share this view.

As far as wiping clean and starting over, that would only be done in a final act of desperation. My PC is too customized to my liking, with so much software installed and personal files that I would dread having to format & reload.

I just had to restore my system. What a pain! Can someone reccommend a good anti-virus program that I can download (for free if possible :D )?

Go to the following link and either download Avast antivirus(I use this one and love it) or AVG. Either will do what you want and both are free.

Roy...

It sounds like a virus has you in its grips. Have you used Spybot S&D and the Coolweb Shredder to make sure all is clean?. If your using XP have you gone to Microsofts One Live area and tried it?. Another product all computers should have is "Crap Cleaner". It is used each day when your finished with your internet session and it will rid you of all the bad cookies and unwanted crap which slips into your computer. It is also on File Hippo and a free program.

Hope this helps some..... Andy

Thanks Andy. I do have Spybot S&D and the Coolweb Shredder but haven't tried them. I know Ad-Aware would have shown me if Coolweb was on my system, since I had it before. I'll try those other things you mentiioned.
