Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) T/C rattle

Hey-

My fathers truck is a 96 4x4. The t-case shifter rattles at highway speeds. If you hold it then it stops... I read a old post and it listed a recall for this. I went to dodgeram.org recall info and found nothing. Anyone know the fix for this annoying rattle?

That is what I meant, not recall but TSB.

Prior post mentions that 94-96 tC linkage was mounted to the TC and transmission while in 97 it was remounted to body with a rod. I'm just wondering if I should buy the newer linkage? Bob, have you performed that TSB on any trucks?

That tsb was hit and miss,it cured some trucks and not others. On my last truck I just put 2 layers of pipe insulation on the transfercase shift lever to silence it.

there was a post a while back on a pretty ingenious way to fix this problem. I will do some research and let you know. But it was basically a piece of tubing and some zip ties, super easy fix and cheap. Let me see what I can dig up

my 96 does the same thing at highway speeds. i was told to put a heavy glove on it.

If someone could make a shifting lever out of qraphite or any non metallic material the noise coming from that source could be reduced considerably. What you are hearing is transmission and transfer case noise telegraphed through the shifting mechanism and shift lever into the cab. I removed the shifting mechanism completely and it made a big difference in noise. Just removing the linkage between shift lever and the transfer case did not make much difference.

If it could be mounted to the frame or cab it would be much better.

LS Farm has done a lot of research on noise abatement. I don't know if he has tried to lessen the noise coming through the 4 WD shifter or not.

I did the spring thing to mine. it cured it, I did not use the Mitsu spring, I found one laying around in the shop that worked.
