Another recent thread brought this problem to mind, but to avoid hijacking I started a new thread. :)

I've had my truck almost 7 years(the '96 in my sig). Sometime after I bought it, I noticed that while trying to shift into 4-LO with the engine running, trans in N or D, and completely stopped, the t-case would grind. :{ Everything seems to work fine otherwise, including shifting into 4-HI while coasting, so I didn't worry about it too much, and it has since become habit for me to shift into Neutral, and kill the engine, before shifting into 4-LO.

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening? The t-case has been working fine otherwise since I initially found the problem around 90k miles, to now around 272k miles.

I would expect that the output shaft of the transmission should not be turning at all while stopped, even in drive... so would this be a transmission or a t-case issue? Anyone else had the same problem?

My Dodge and old Ford had identical symptoms. Make sure it's in neutral and shift it quickly with no hesitation into 4wd lo. It should go right in. I did the gentle shift thing and it'll grind your hand off. The instructions say to shift briskly or something like that. They're not kidding. I don't know if the manual guys have to deal with situation.

Its a slushbox problem. My dads auto does it and my stick doesnt. I convinced him that he doesnt really need low range for his very rare need of 4x4. When the transfer case hits the neutral spot it lets the transmissiion kinda freewheel and a quick shift avoids this freewheeling. When I showed him that he needed to shift it quickly, he complains that it is hard to hold it still with the extra gear reduction. The only time I use low range is to back up a trailer occasionally and when I went truck pulling once. Hope this helps.
