Brake booster question

my transfercase has seemed to have a slight gear noise to it, but it is getting worse and its really iritating. if i grab the shifter and hold it to the right and keep it off the resting point its usually quiet. or if i pull it back towards 4high it quiets down for a bit, but it sounds like a gear wine, its a very repetative metalice wowowoow... . if you know what i mean. it changes with the engine rpm when im in gear. say if im in 2nd at 1700rpms in a parkings lot, the wowowow is very fast a loud, but if im in 5th at 1500rpms its slower and dull. any help would be great thanks.

Block the wheels, put it in neutral. Climb underneath and see if either shaft has play. I had an '89 that the front shaft bearings in the t-case were shot. I found it when I was pulling the trans to do a rear main seal. That was before I even drove it.

i put it in nuetral, couldnt really notice any play or slop in the shaft. the front shaft was actually tighter than the rear. the rear might have had a little slop in it, but just rotational, it was tight as far as up-down, left-right.

Look up "T-case rattle fix" or something to that effect- lots of info for fixes. I think there may even be a kit to fix the rattle. Both my 4x4s had that problem as well. Roll of duck tape on the shifter cured it in both.

so if i take the boot off the shifter an wrap ducktap around the area where it rests on its side that should help? sounds pretty good to me :)

Keep the boot on there. the weight of the roll of duct tape will hold it just enough to the side to greatly reduce the rattle.

haha, oh you mean to litterally put a role of ducktap on the shifter... :) i gotcha now. interesting idea. the strange thing is, it seems to be really internal, the noise is like gears wining er somthing, its not exactly a rattle, more of like a harmonic vibration or somthing, i dont no.

for instance, i can feel the movement directly in my hand when i grab the shifter while driving, the vibration, or gears moving or what ever it is, can be felt exaclty the way it sounds to your ears, if you hold onto the shifter... if that makes sence.
