For about the last week, there has been an intermittent stumble of the engine that seems to coincide with the tachometer going nuts. Actually, its seems like the tach just loses its signal and goes dead. The engine never dies, it just stumbles momentarily. Once, just after I started it, the engine revved like I tapped the throttle, and the tach went nuts at the same time. The problem seems to be getting worse, and I'm a little concerned it might be the beginning of something bigger that could leave me stranded along the road.

The check engine light has come on each time this happens. So far it has reset itself twice, but it hasn't reset since the last time it was tripped. The only code I get from the computer is #1693. I think that's just an over boost warning left over from a long time ago.

Can anyone tell me where the tach gets its signal from? Any suggestions as to what this might be would be appreciated.

Thanks for any help,

Ron

Took care of similar problem just 3 days ago. Changed camshaft position sensor, (what a b**ch). I think you might have a crankshaft position sensor, which is easier to change. Both cost about $35. 00 from Cummins, about double from dealer. Do a forum search for lots of info on this subject. Good luck.

I'm on my way to check the connection now. I'll order one from cummins as soon as I get the chance. I hope that does it.

Thanks, -Ron

That would be my guess.
