Can anybody post some pics of the alternater after they installed a tach on a non-IC engine. I did a search and found a thread 4yrs old that had some links that don't work anymore. Anybody have a part number for the Isspro 2" (I think) tachs and magnetic hook up? Thanks.

Scott

If you get an ISSPRO tach (I forget the exact model number- maybe R8503?- but both mine are 4000RPM), there is a kit (R8912)that mounts on the harmonic balancer pulley. I attached my magnets tonite, and will hook up the rest of it in the morning. If the weather cooperates, I'll take pics and have Mom shrink them down to post here. My contribution for the quarter. ;)

Many of the vendors here sell ISSPRO gauges. I have dealt with DIS www.dieselpage.com for 3 or 4 years now, and have gotten good service from them, and they have good prices, to boot.

Isspro's alternator tachs are all big 3 3/8" none are 2". If you want a small 2 incher you'll have to buy a magnet/sensor kit for the harmonic balancer. An alternator tach won't need a sensor, just wire it to the one of the rectifiers, I think is the correct term, on the back of the alternator. Some said you have to remove the alt from the truck and then remove the back cover to access those rectifiers or whatevers, but I could remove that cover with the alt still on the truck. Go to www.isspro.com for pics and part numbers, request a free color catalog, nice. Check my readers rigs for pics, not sure if I have one of the alt though. Simple job, once you get there you'll figure it out.

I have an Isspro tach that runs off the alternator pulse... it's the 3 3/8 size.

I removed the alternator and then removed the cover and connected to one of the rectifyers on the bench. Just made it easier than hanging over the engine, but it could be done that way too.

As for pics of the alternator... there's really nothing to see other than a wire comming out from the back cover.

Tach drive/signal

For what its is worth, of the aproximately 1000 cummins that we have installed on the burners, all use the tach drive/signal. That seems to be as reliable as anything else. They may not be precisely accurate but certainly give a relatively good reading.

Thanks for the replies fellas.

Daniel,

When you get the pics that will help, if you need an email address let me know in case you can't get them small enough, thanks for the numbers.

James,

I didn't think non-IC had the tach signal like the IC models did??? Where is the tach signal located or how can I tap into it?

answer to Scott

Sometimes I don't type what I think. Or think what I type, or just plain goof up. I should have been specific that the signal on the power units all come from the alternator. That is where my brain was but not what I wrote. Sorry.

I believe you are correct on the IC non IC differences. If you don't have the pickup, just use the alternator type and you will get satisfactory result.

My Bad as the kids say.

I no longer have my first gen (89 350) but I used a prox sensor that worked off of the ring gear for the starter. I drilled and tapped a hole in the bell housing and then set the dipswitches to the carrect number for the tach (one from Murphy Switchgage).

I also have a tach drive adapter for the front of the timing gear cover (it replaces the stock oil fill tube and was used on industrial B Series engines) if anyone is interested.

Cheers,

Kernel-

Look for pics tomorrow afternoon. I got the tach in and working today, just have to clean stuff up, stuff a few wires here and there, and put the dash back together. (and remember to take pics along the way) Also working on a '94 40-20-40 split bench seat and fitting thereof into my regular cab. ALSO (sheez) have to pull out the fender dent from the tree I tried to mow over the other day, in case I ever want to open the passenger door. Then if it aint dark yet, p/s pump seal kit in Mom's. No time for horsing around with the new horse. Got 2hrs to get home to the little woman after I leave here.
