Those poor Ford guys

A question for my TDR friends.

What is the redline on the 3rg Gen CTD's?

The reason I ask is. A co-worker has a 1st Gen that has a 2200 redline. My 2nd Gen has a 3200 redline. Why is there a 1000 rpm difference in the trucks? Is there a difference in the 2nd Gen to the 3rd Gen? We were just wondering. Thanks guys and gals.

Redline varies because of year, injection system setup, transmission, etc. It doesn't pertain to what the engine can withstand mechanically, obviously it wouldn't hurt to spin a 1st Gen past 2200!

The redline on my '96 5-speed 12v and '98 12v auto is 3000 RPM. I don't always abide by it though :D

A first gen shouldn't redline at 2200. Mine would do about 2500 in stock form before it started to defuel. A few turns on the stop screw and it will do about 2700 now. I could install a 3200 rpm spring and get it that high easily.

Perhaps your friend's throttle linkage is not letting it go full travel? Perhaps the tach is off?

Try making a post in the first gen section and you'll get lots of answers I'm sure.

I think clarification of "Redline" is in order.

That term refers to the max RECOMMENDED RPM of an engine, not what it is capable of.

My '98 would not redline even when not under load and floored because of de-fueling. After I installed a 3K GSK it would easily pass the 3000 RPM redline. I'm not sure how high it would wind up because I never tried it. Redline on my '06 is 3200 but I haven't tried to see if it will top that.

A lot of gassers have a redline of 8K or even more.
