The two signals that I have seen suggested for this are the camshaft position sensor (CMP) and crankshaft position sensor (CKP).

My problem with the CMP is that it seems to be shutdown after the engine has been running for a bit.

My problem with the CKP signal is that it seems to put out 58 pulses per revolution and my tach doesn't have a divide by 58 option.

Am I missing something? Does anybody have a good fix for either of the above two issues? Is there another signal somewhere that is more tach friendly?

I thought I heard that there was a signal off of the alternator for a tach on diesels? Maybe someone will chime in that knows more... --Eric

There is a "diesel tach generator" used for remote starters. They work good for them but I don't know if it is accurate enough for a gauge since it just converts pulses from the alternator and converts them to an AC signal. You could always convert to a 12v fluid damper which has a pickup slot and use just about any aftermarket tach.
