Hey guys, I bought the autometer tach that has the little sensor that clamps to the alternator. The instructions show to clamp it directly over the center of the alternator where there are some type of lamination where the case comes apart in the middle, I think that may be called a stator ring. Well, the dodge alternators on this year truck is not made that way, no type of this kind of part showing, alternator does not come apart in the middle. Will this tach still work on this alternator just clamped to the outside of it. I'd like to know so I can send it back if it's not gonna work.

on my old 93 there was a connector under the dash that I hooked to that gave me lights and a tach reading. Pretty sure it was a 3 or 4 prong connector and all you needed was female spade connectors.

That plug did not appear until the 92 model trucks.

I don't know about the autometer. I went with ISSPRO and got the sensor kit that mounts 2 magnets on my harmonic balancer :)rolleyes: ) and installed a sensor. works great.

I do know there is a way to hook some tachs up to the alternator but the ones I have heard of require removing the back and hooking up to something inside.

Sorry can't be more help.

The 91. 5 I had 2 years ago didnt have the factory tach hookup on the H-balancer; it had some aftermarket butchered up job that didnt work. So, my guess would be, the factory hookup didnt appear til 92. My 11/90 doesnt have it. Hafta get that danged kit from DIS.

Well, I took a gamble and hooked er up, it works. It says to calibrate it do so at highway speed. Haven't got that far yet. Set it on about 725 at idle and flat on the floor it turns about 3150, so I assume it is good, smooth needle operation not jerky, I'm really pleasnatly surprised. Didn't know how good this thing would work, I mean it seems kinda flakey, a sensor clamped to the outside of the alternator, time will tell.

3150? You played with the pump? Before I plyed with the pump on my 93 she'd only turn 2800. But, that was also an auto. Don't know if there is a difference.
