Tachometer

I have a '91 D250 12 valve 5 speed. I bought the truck with 212,000 miles on it from the original owner. He took very good care of this truck and had all the records from day 1. It now has 247,000 miles on it and has not given me one minutes problem. It has no tachometer or any other meters other than ammeter, oil pressure, gas gauge (busted?), heat gauge and skipping speedometer... What am I going to have to go through to install a tachometer and exhaust gas temp. gage?? Did Dodge make a factory set of gages that included a tachometer in '91? As a first time diesel owner, any help would be appreciated... . Thanks, R. Barrett

Do a search in the 1st gen forum lots of info there. The www.dieselpage.com has some of the best prices on most gauges, www.egauges.com has alot of good mounts and www.genosgarage.com is also a good source.

is your truck intercooled? (early or late '91?) I think the factory tach was an option in the late '91-'93, if so there is a connector under the dash for hooking up a tach, any tach that works for a 4 cylinder gas engine should work... if you have an early '91 do a search in the 1st gen forum and you will find options. I just ordered a tach from JCWhitney that is a 4000 rpm gas engine model,I'll post info on it when I get it(if it's a piece of junk... ) the reason I went with that is the other tachs I found were all 8000 to 10,000 rpm which are not in my trucks future... when you get a chance fill in your truck profile/signature it will help people answer questions.

Autometer makes a diesel tach that has a sending unit that mounts to the alternator. It costs about $110. It is literally a 10 minute install. I chose this gauge because it matched the z-series gauges that I bought. go to

what is the RPM range of that tach?

Go to summit racing and search for ATM-2888.



0-5000. It comes with a back mounting cup and sending unit.

If you have an early 91 there is no wiring harness provision.

I added a tach by tapping into the alternator, as is done in the marine diesel applications. Since there was no "R" terminal on the alternator, I removed the back cover and ran a lead from one of the rectifyers. Easy to do. Tach works great, appears accurate (verified with an optical tach).

I had read on this forum that any 4 cylinder tach will work with the existing wiring in tach/option trucks, I have continued to spread the myth..... I just tried hooking in a 4 cylinder/switchable 4- 6-8 tach from JCWhitney, it does not work, though it is a very nice unit. I called the company that makes it DATCON, their tech was very helpfull, and they said they do have a whole line of tach and tach/hourmeters that will, with RPM ranges 2500, 3000, 3500, 4000 and on up, they have a new tach that is settable to work with any input, their Deluxe II model 111562, I am going to get this and try it out, will post results. I am probably making this project harder than it has to be, but I am determined to use the factory harness if it kills me..... and I like the idea of having a 3500 rpm tach...
