as some of you probably have already rewired your tag lights, what im saying is the factory setup is junk, i have had a meltdown on the left one over a year ago, the plastic inside is so brittle it just crumbles, got to looking just a few minutes ago there is a nice big hole directly above the tag has anyone used this to put just one large tag light and not have to be worrying about the factory ones. I for one don't want a short due to dampness or water and that looks like some of my issue with blown bulbs.

If one were to do this could i only use one set of the wires or would i need to tie both into one, take in mind i do all my extra light wiring and to this date i have not melted or blown anything, of course there is always a first LOL... . I have to have these working, inspection has to be done before the end of the month :-laf

tag light

I haad the same problem with mine. Junk indeed. I went to pep-boys and bought a small "dome" type tag light... actually two of them. I drilled two holes in the plastic next to the old ones and used the same pigtails to wire them in. It was a clean installation and very inexpensive not to mention nice and bright. The lights had a gasket so no water issues.

just my $. 02

Thanks for the reply, any chance you have a picture of those, we do not have a pep boys here but im sure i was looking at those today i just wasn't sure on how to fix it properly, if you happen to have a picture or a link that would be great, for right now they are temporarily fixed at least for inspection, like i said before anyone that would put plastic on a truck should be slapped silly... .

tag light

I don't have a digital camera or I'd send a pic. The whole assembly is about 1 1/2 inch wide and no more than 3 inches tall. In the center is a half round "blister" of which half of that is clear to allow the light to shine only towards the tag. You have to dril one hole to allow the wire to pass through. The unit attaches with two self tapping screws. A foam rubber gasket keeps the whole thing dry.

Hope this helps.

I was wonder what the heck a tag light was until I clicked that link.

License plate light :D

I just bought a new one from the dealer, was $13. My buddy has a 99 Ram 1500, his did the same. I figured 1 light in 8 years, not worth re-engineering something.
