Been a while since I read all the TAG threads. Don't recall to much being said about any consistant milage increases if any. One that sticks in my mind is that someone said that they got an increase of 4mpg while towing. I find that hard to believe. Now that these things have been out for a while does anyone have more experience with TAG 1 of TAG 2 that they want to share??? If I could squeeze 1 mpg out of it that would be great :D

You might get 1 mpg out of it with the Tag I don't know about the II more than likely its just gonna be a few tenths but every little bit helps plus you will notice a little difference nothing that will set you back in the seat but I can tell its there. Some notice it some don't.

I have had a tag for awhile now, and have not noticed any fuel mileage increase that I can attribute directly to it.

Is the TAG-II available yet for the '03 trucks??

Yes I have been getting a consistant 1 MPG increase unloaded. But with towing no increase.

Extended TAG II towing test

Lent my buddy my TAG II, http://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/tag for an extended towing vacation, Montana to New Mexico and there abouts the long way.

'97 3500 modified with around 350hp pulling a 13,000 lb fifth wheel. He has kept mpg records for every tank, figured by hand, since the truck was new. Beside a very much noticeably quieter turbo, over 6800 miles and 22 fill ups his average towing mpgs increased 1. 4 mpg with the TAG II over no TAG.

Best TAG tank was 4 mpgs over his pre-TAG average, some tanks with TAG were the same as the pre TAG average but none were below the long term average. Best tanks were driving in mountainous areas.

In the couple of tanks he ran not towing both were the highest mpgs he has ever gotten at 24. 7 and 24. 3, that's 2 mpgs over his pre-TAG average. He said it seemed like he was blowing less smoke with the TAG but didn't really notice any egt reductions. Boost on flat land was reduced by 1-2 psi.

Sounds good to me. Problem now is getting my TAG back from him, he says it's stuck in there :)

Actually funny you should ask about the TAG-II for the 03 trucks. No TAG-II, but we are releasing a TAG-III for the 03-05 trucks at the end of this month. It has the benefiits the second gen trucks see from the TAG-II, but is made much differently for the 03 and newer trucks. The TAG-III consists of a single air large air guide with a housing that tapers like a velocity stack all the way to the silencer ring. So far the performance of the TAG-III is excellent. We will be releasing information and photos of these very soon.

I know Ryan, and he is has a very analytical mind. I really can’t believe he bought into this.

LOL, yeah I bought into it. Most critical to a radial compressor is uniform flow normal to the face. The TAG provides that, in my opinion.

I cannot make any claims to performance or mileage improvements as a result of using the TAG, however. But if I were designing a turbo, I'd have a TAG built into the inlet. ;)

Engines come from Cummins without an air filter - that doesn't mean having one isn't necessary. ;)

LOL, you caught me.

That sounded like product bashing, that wasn't my intent, so I deleted it.

All in good fun, Jeff! After I submitted my thread I noticed you deleted the one I referenced. I didn't think your post was in bad taste at all... in fact I thought it was quite informative and I'm sorry you deleted it... I know I learned from it! :)

what exactly is the surface area decrease across the face in a CTD application?
I assume you mean the amount of cross sectional area that the honeycomb material covers. Can't tell you exactly, but I believe less than 3% of the area is blocked. The cell wall thickness in only 0. 004" thick.

Tag

I've had the TAG installed on two long trips this year. One trip in the early spring from Texas to Idaho and another trip recently from Idaho to Minnesota

The TAG , and AFE, gave me about . 5mpg over stock. It's not much... but I'll take it. I usually remove both when I'm at work in the summer and not towing. The AFE filter is too loud for me and the combo doesn't do anything for mileage driving around town or short trips.

Overall I'ed say they were easy an up-grades and provide a little improvement when hualing any real weight (extra fuel wants more air for proper burn).

Don't expect any "big" seat of the pants improvements. What I did feel was the reduced back-pressure when down shifting. I think this was the AFE mega cannon air filter... it really cuts pumping losses on the intake side. This might be good for 4 or 5 hp... hard to say.
