How hard is it to remove and reinstall a compressor housing on a hx40 turbo? I need to remove it for machining to get a tag installed.

It's pretty easy especially if you have a large vice. Best to remove the entire turbo first. The bolts connecting the two housings together may be hard to remove, some penetrating oil is a good idea. It may be necessary to hammer tap the two halves apart. Make sure to mark where the two housings come together so that it matches up with the oil ports and manifold connection when you reinstall it. It's easier to remove the oil return line off the bottom after the turbo is off, just loosen the hose clamp lower on the block and pull the turbo out with the line attached. Same goes for reinstall.

Banks has good instruction but they're not on the web, this may help a little http://www.4wheeloffroad.com/howto/7274/

nfox, I don't know if this applies to you or not, however; I recently installed a Stage 2 kit from HiTech Turbo on my HX35. This kit consists of a HX40 compressor housing and a 8 blade 60 cm. HX40 compressor wheel.

I also installed the stock HX35 silencer ring and snapring in the new compressor housing, this allowed me to install the TAG unit with no mods to the new housing.

You've likely already checked this out, just wondering (based on the housing I installed ) if your housing is already machined for the snap ring, allowing the stock HX35 silencer to work.

hx40

I took my air inlet hose off of hx40 tonight and it is already machined with a snap ring groove and installed my silencer ring off of hx35 and i have a quiet turbo again. Oo.
