Anybody removed their tailgate and/or have an extra cable/support they can part with? One of mine had badly cracked sheathing and had rusted considerably... sooooooo... ... it broke:{

Thanks,

The Grinch

$12 frome the dealer?, Guess I got hosed at +- $45 cdn.

The Grinch,

Get new ones, they are a lot cheaper than a crease across your tailgate that matches your bumper.

Cheers

I was at a NAPA a couple of weeks ago and noticed that they had replacement tailgate cables for our trucks. I think it was on their "Help!" rack - didn't check the price. I've had to replace both of mine. One of em is from Willyslover's dead 3500 - the other one from that truck is running around PA! :D

Just replaced both of mine. They broke when the tailgate slipped out of my fathers hand and it dropped. I noticed they were both rusted in the middle. I think I paid $30. 00 for both from NAPA. No bumper crease! :::whew:: Might be on the safe side just to replace them both.

Tailgate Cables...

If one tailgate cable breaks, replace both tailgate cables as pairs. The unbroken tailgate cable wouldn't match the length of a new tailgate cable. Hence only one tailgate cable would be holding up your tailgate.

I was lucky last year when one of mine broke -- no damage. I replaced both (of course) and when I got the new ones, my friendly parts person told ne that the guy who bought the last pair from him had his arm in a cast --this unlulckly fellow was standing on the tailgate when the cable broke!!

Another good reason to replace BOTH cables! :--)

New cable can be purchased at any hard ware or home depot type store and the crimp end can be pried open and re-crimped cost about dollar a foot and any time plastic cover is cut replace as water will get in to the center of the wires and rust out . Ron in Louisville metro KY (The original skin flint)////

I've used black silicone to seal the ends of the cables, doesn't show, and a the very least will work until the sheathing gets a nick in it.

Tailgate cable retrofit?

I'm a recent first time Dodge Ram diesel owner (was, I repeat, WAS a Chevy guy. . No more). . Lovin' it, but the one thing I don't like is these tailgate cables!! I have a camper shell and must load 800lb antique aircraft engines on 4 legged stand into bed of truck by first setting them on the tailgate and sliding them in. . (I haven't done it yet w/ this truck, but will in about a week or two), and scarez the hell out of me. . :--)

Is it possible to double the cables or has anyone retro fitted 'normal' pickup truck solid steel 'scissor' type braces??. . Thanks. . John G

I made scissors type braces for my '99 before I got the 2001. I'm sure you could retofit an old set if they were handy. I just took the clamps off as suggested previously on this post, and then welded them to a scissors setup a I made out of a couple pieces of 1/4 inch thick 1 once wide pieces of metal. I don't remember the measurements, , they were roughly 5 inch pieces bolted together for the scissors action though. This worked great and I didn't have any problems. I am going to do that to my 2001 when I think about it and it gets above 0 degrees outside.

Good Luck;)

Tailgate braces

Thanks Ptrodock. . When you say 'clamps' are you refering to the stock cable 'ends'?. . I have an old Chevy set of those. . Think I'll give it a try. . Thanks. . John G

Tailgate braces

Well I took out the old chevy set and they/re too short, But from the looks of things, I may be able to manufacture them from slightly larger stock. . and use the Dodge connect points. . Once I get them made, perhaps I should make a few extra. . I'll bet there's more guys out there than me, that would like a better alternative. . JG
