Tailpipes...4wd vs 2wd

Hey guys,
Gotta question. I noticed that the 4x's have a straighter tailpipe whereas the 2x's have a pipe that twists more at the end. I got my Dad the 4" stainless tip from Geno's and it looks like I will have to cut it in half to keep it from sticking out too far. I figure if I could swap to the straighter tailpipe that I wouldn'y have to trim it. I was wondering what years/models used the straighter pipe? I hope this makes sense. It seems that some have an "S" shape and some are just a straight shot.

94 to 97 use the "S" curve at the end of the tailpipe. 98 and up use a straight tip. 98's had the pipe at a 90 degree angle to the bed, melting the mudflap on 3500's. DC has since changed that and angled it out a little.

My advice would be to take the truck to a muffler shop and have them cut some of the old tip off. Then you can install the new tip and angle it back a little.

Thanks for the info. I think I might try finding a 98+ pipe and seeing if it will bolt up. My Dad's is a 2500 with the small mud flap so the close proximity shouldn't be a problem.

I put a stainless extension on my '95 -- it is back far enough that you can cut the end off of the 'S' stock pipe (immediately before the elbow) then put on the extension. Eyeball it too be sure, but it was no problem with my '95 duallie. Since your dad's is a 3/4 ton you could probably cut it back even further. The 'rule' in my mind is to have the pipe out beyond the fender well to keep fumes from getting sucked under and into the truck -- if you're using a turn down that means it should stick out all the way until the inside portion of the opening is outside the fender (four inches out with a 4" pipe -- looks good on a duallie but I don't know about a flat fender).

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look at it and see if I can do that. I hope so, I'm having horrible luck finding a factory pipe from a 98+.
