I got a notice in the mail telling me I have/had a vehicle that has a Takata Air Bag. It's telling me to IMMEDIATELY contact the dealer for replacement. Then it goes on with a bunch of legal talk about debtors. Specifically dealing with wrongful death.

Lots of fine print but essentially in both the Us and Japan Takata has filed for Chapter 11 protection. Is it any wonder?

The good is they give you a website to check if you have an airbag recall outstanding. It's super easy in that you can enter your license plate or vin number. All my vehicles are good!

Even though the Shrapnel Bomb recall recall was already done on my 2003 Dodge I also received this notice. In summery this is informing you that new Ammonium Nitrate Airbag Shrapnel Bomb Wrongful Injury and/or Death settlements will not be from Takata as the legal action liquidated the company in bankruptcy. OEM's are now going to do all they can to get the liability recalled, but, expect them to point fingers at a now bankrupt company and try and get out of any damages for making a poor choice with the "Low Bidder" supplier. The OEM's are suffering as well as they can't get reimbursed by Takata anymore for recalls.

Sadly even with as major of a news story this is, largest recall in history of everything, and major efforts of the OEM's, there will be people and used car dealers living under a rock that do not get their vehicles recalled. (I have personally seen people breathing our good air refuse to take a GM ignition switch recall seriously on a vehicle that was beyond recall troublesome with the switch by jumping clear back to acc after start and endangering my life by doing so. One had to carefully use the ignition switch so it would stop in 'run' and not shut the engine off after starting. :eek: It took massive effort to roll a bus over them and get the problem solved.) The real tragedy is the shortages of replacement parts that by the unprecedented size of the recalls could not be done when this story was on the news 24/7. Regardless YOU have to look out for your own safety as others are not going to do so.

They are not kidding about immediately contacting a dealer for replacement. More so now as the making your "estate" whole is going to be more difficult due to the bankruptcy. Even with (clearly we don't have) a nationwide mandatory inspection for recalls that are not completed or you can't renew yearly or bi-yearly registration the sheer number will have vehicles still falling through the cracks.

The Takata Ammonium Nitrate Airbag Shrapnel Bombs will be with us for a long time with news stories coming up now and then about another missed recall going off badly.
 
I thought they filed chapter 11,if it was 13 it would be different. Not many companies pull through reorganization but they may pull it off
 
Correct, Chapter 11 in June and also a Chapter 15 in August all while trying to sell off viable operations. (IMO liquidating like old bankrupt GM and new GM. Edit actually it's more like Chrysler bankruptcy to become FCA.) It's really about limiting exposure to lawsuits over the their Ammonium nitrate use, cover ups, and now disaster.
