Im am working on taking out my transmission to put it a new clutch and rebuild it. I am now having a problem with taking the shifter off. Do I really have to use the special tool like the manual says to?

do not pull the shift lever apart at any cost. Like Dieseldemon says, take a screwdriver and at the bottom of the shift lever where it goes into the transmission, under both covers, there is a cap with two pin cutouts, push it down and rotate the cap and the whole shifter lever will come out.

Special tool manufacturing instructions. Take one 1. 25x10" iron pipe nipple, and with a Ford tool (big hammer), oval one end a little.

Then after you've pushed the shifter down and then rotated and pulled it out of the shifter tower, slide the new ST (special tool) into the coller with the spring, press down and rotate.

If the ST has been tuned correctly using the Ford tool, the shifter stub should lift out. If the ST does not fit properely, additional tuning may be required

Good luck, RJ

A pair of big heavy snap ring pliers work pretty well also to remove the collar, if you put the tabs of the snap ring pliers in the corners of the collar push down and rotate COUTNER clockwise.
