Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Talk me out of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I want a 4Door badly and since the Dodge 4 doors have only been out for a short time, I am thinking an 00 or 01 Furd. Whats the good points (if any) and the bad points??? Just need more room.

I have a 2003 4 door and I am extremely satisfied. I am loving the extra room. Any time I have adults in the back I make a point of asking them how they like the seats etc. So far no one has complained. They find the seats comfortable and the room adequate. My wife even rode in the back for a trip and was quite content. The folding steel floor for carrying almost anything is a brilliant idea and makes the cab so versatile. The rear part of the cab may not be as long as C or F's but I find it to be satisfactory. The wheel base of these trucks is long enough so a little less length in the cab helps. I had a 94 for over 10 years and I am real happy I made the switch. The little extra length in C or F is not worth the rest of the strong points of the Dodge/Cummins. My 2 cents.

I'm still torn as to whether or not to get rid of the '94 and "upgrade" to a 3rd Gen...



I really love the reliability and simplicity of my '94..... but the 3rd Gens are soooooo nice. I'm willing to give up the simplicity and cheap modifications for a newer and very much improved truck... .



Maybe I'll buy a 3rd Gen... . ditch the 24-valve head and common-rail injection system and bolt on a 12-valve head with P-7100.

Thanks, I can buy an 00 or 01 Furd alot cheaper than an 03 Dodge though. But I guess if you factor in the repairs that the Furd will require probably about the same amount of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

A 2004 4X4 for just a little over 32K is going to be hard to beat by any Ford dealer.

Don't want to start anything, but I own both. I have a 98 Q. C. Dodge and a 99 CC Ford.



Actually I have spent way more on the Dodge than I have on the Ford. But that being said, I bought the Ford new and for the same reason your looking at them. You can't beat the room period. The ride is softer than my Ram.



I have 50k miles on the Ford, had a glow plug relay go out and that is it. They do have issues at about 80K miles with the cam position senser, most Ford guys carry one around just in case, very easy to replace, but truck won't run if it goes bad.



I like things about them both and there are things I don't like about them both. Personally I'm not a "Brand" kind of person. I buy what works for me. I do believe that the Cummins is a better engine than the Powerstroke--haven't really had any problems with either of them. Got to Love them Diesels.



A friend just bought a Chevy Duramax, I like that too. Sorry for running on.



If you want lots of Room you'll like the Ford. I would probably trade my Ford in on a 2004 Dodge if they really made a Crew Cab instead of a 4 door extended cab, Dodge is loosing sales to the other two because of it. I'm 6'4" and I like not being all crunched in, plus my friend that ride with me don't like it either.



What I think is coming down the road is a real 4 door Crew Cab Toyota, if they put a Cummins in that. ---- I'm there.

Call me old fashioned, but the Fords are too quiet. Plus, how can anything but an inline be considered as a real diesel?

Have you ever been next to a Power Stroke at the stop light in a gasser? My own opinnion I think they're louder (in a more abnoxious way) souds like about 5 drummers playin' the symbols!!

The Fords are more room, but my experience with them on the north slope-96 till 2001 ,,and hear in the valley. . is they require more maintenance. . my customers with powerstrokes are having injector and high pressure oil pump problems. That can be $$$ if you cant do it yourself. .

also fords auto-trans and the dual mass fly wheel can cause some trouble too...

Do what I am doing... . get a Cummins conversion of a 1995-1997 Ford F350 4x4 crew cab. 12V Cummins... NV5600... NP241HD... Full size rear seat. The best of both worlds.



My dilemma was... ... I need a FULL SIZE crew cab (4 children), I want a diesel. I had a bad experience with a Powerstroke and will not own another diesel that fires it's injectors with HP oil... so a PSD is out. Leaves me with either a Ford with a 460, or a GM crew cab. A GM with a DuraMax is out of my budget... a new Dodge is too small and also out of my budget. 10mpg with a 460 is too painful to consider. So I ended up with a 1995 Ford F350 being converted by Roger at FordCummins... . for roughly the same money as a Ford with a Powerstroke would have cost in my area.

The cousin just bought an 04. It has only 1500 or so on the clock & just laid down a 250 mile trip on 10 gallons of fuel. They are way happy. Same trip in their 97 gasser would have been at a 15-16 gallon rate. He cannot wait to hook up to the TT. They thought the Ford looked cheap, interior wise. Very happy with the Dodge. DK.

This is what I experienced with Ford. They do have some comfort features which Dodge needs to copy. For example the sun viser. Ford has the dual visor option which allows you to move the first visor over the side window while keeping the second on the winshield. Its nice not having to swing the visor back and forth late in the day when you make alot of turns. Since Dodge changed the angle of the windshield, that dam visor is a pain to swing. Its too low and just not long enough. There was also a problem with a run of weak transmissions from Dodge. I think that killed it for alot of future Dodge owners. I drive a Ford 550 on my job. The diesel gets louder with age. It doesn't have as much power as the cummins. They geared the truck down so it revs high for more pulling and passing power. Rpms are always in the 2500 range. Poor fuel economy vs the Cummins. In my opinion stick with the one that has a cummins.

Had a Ford PSD beg me for a jump start yesterday. Got a look under the hood. What a nightmare!



However, with theGen3 thinner metal and mucho plastic under the hood Dodge must be via for #1 in the cheap and chinsy contest. Are you listening DC.

I will tell you that I work with a guy who has bought more trucks than I can count an he bought a new ford because it was the latest thing out and it was suppose to make a lot of power. It is a 4 x4 and 4 doors. It has been in the shop 17 times and he told me that ford has already bought back over 550 or so. He has now got a lawyer. It will run like a bat of ..... and just die. Or sometimes it will just take off at a idle, not good at a stop light. The dealer ship supposedly has cut and patched every wire on it.

Bottom line is a guy who would only buy Fords because it had 4 doors is now going to get his money and buy a Duramax. I asked if Ford would sell me a lemon law truck so I could install a cummins in it. Love the truck except for the engine. Pm me if you wont to an I will arrange a telephone call to the guy, as I am sure he wont mind.

Or you could just 4-door what you have. There was a thread on this a few months ago and it seems like the conversion was about 10k, but thats what the engine conversion is at fordcummins.com... .
