so i guess the 2010's come with a axle option of 354gears. anyone swap these into the american axle's of the early 3'gs? i've been waiting to swap out those 373's for somthing more highway friendly now the boat is gone(and i have my 1993:-laf ) anyone do the swap yet? sorry post is so sloppy! kids crawling all over me... ... .

We had an F550 Ford that came with the wrong gears. . and we found that the same axles were used in another truck... . going to the manufacturer of the axle we found several sets of gears that would suit our needs... . we like you wanted taller gears for more over the highway use... . for us it was a walk across the street for new gears and than sending the ring gear to a machine ship... as there was a sensor and toothed stamped gear on the ring gear... we settled on a ratio that put the truck at 1700 rpm at 70 mph...

we had the machine shop put a register on the ring gear to support the toothed gear and away we went... that truck ran for 500K miles after the change...

But you have to do both the front and rear, which might be a little harder. . but I'd start with the American Axle web page and see what ratio's they offer for your axles...

After doing the Ford we wouldn't be afraid to do one of our Dodges. . but so far we're happy with what we have and how we use it...

Hope this helps. .

i'll check out AA's site. 1700 @ 70..... sign me up! with the G56 its more like 2250. i dont know anyone with the ability to machine gears. nevermind ring and pinion's!

what should i expect to pay for a job like this? in these times we all look for a little more dollar stretch. i'm hoping the cost VS savings is worth the job!

You might not understand, on the F550, Ford puts a sprocket or toothed gear to run the ABS and speedometer... that is attached to the side of the ring gear... the ring gear set we bought wasn't available from Ford but was off the counter from a distributor of the axle... who offers a full range of ring and pinions... .

We needed the sprocket for the ABS and speedometer to work... so we had the ring gear machined to accept the old sprocket... the side of the ring gear is soft... its only the face (teeth) that are rock hard... .

And there are aftermarket suppliers of gears... Remember Zoom, I think they are still around... .

Hope this helps. .

I believe the other ratio is a 3. 42. I believe the 3. 42's were available in '08-'09 also. With your . 79 6th, that would make a nice truck. My '07, 5. 9 got the . 74 6th and at 2k rpm, I am running 65mph. I have even thought about the 3. 42's

I just calculated your speed in 6th providing you have stock tires and you would be turning just under 70mph (69. 68mph) at 2K rpm with the 3. 42 ratio.

Yep, 3. 42's have been an option for a couple years now. Quite a few have switched to them and like the rpm drop. Your probably looking at $1000-1200 per axle for the swap.

Now if the new . 74 OD gear on the G56 could be swapped in that could be another option. Haven't heard for sure if thats possible though.
