has anyone tried removing the stock hood latch assembly (and installing hood pins) to make room for a taller intercooler?



in my '92 it looks like i can gain about 5" in intercooler height if i do this!



who would you have custom build an intercooler if you wanted the best?

Really though, I met a guy that put a 3rd gen I/C in his 1st. Man, he has no grill! The I/C is huge, and sticks out to where the grill would. He has a quilted winter front on it, not much protection. It looks bad, but he said it keeps the pyro way down.

Yes, Joe Hellmann. It is thicker than a third gen and effieceincy seems to be around 95+ percent. I have pyros at both ends of the intercooler and using about 15 psi or less outlet side air is almost identicle to outside air. My Bank$ intercooler wasn't that good. I have 3. 5" inlet and outlets. I would suggest 3" instead.

What about using a Stroker intercooler 6. 0 or 7. 3. They have 3" in and out. I don't know if they are better than Banks but way cheaper.

If you are looking at a custom cooler why not just put a 2nd gen, or stroker Spearco in there. There is a group buy on the 2nd gens in the process.

I used the Powerstroke I/C in mine and I had to remove the hood latch. It was a easy install. I used the intake horn and I/C tubes off of a 2002 dodge.

I got the I/C tubes and Intake horn from Dave at Diesel Power Products which by the way Dave has sold the business to a new owner out of town. I have pictures also. Click link.

taller is better, got to be...



now, i noticed that if i remove that tiny little bottle jack that the truck came with, and the mount for it, then remove the coolent overflow tank, there is a ton more room on the front passenger side of the truck



if i am gonna have a custom i/c built why not have it hang off that direction a ways and gain even more volume?



or is there a point where the volume is too great (spool up lag over weighs temp decrease benifit)????



also, what about putting the i/c infront of the a/c condensor? has anyone tried that?

I'd think anything wider than the grille would be wasteful, as no air flows past the headlights. There is a guy who installed a 3rd Gen IC in his 89-ish truck. I bought one, saw that I had measured something wrong, and resold it for $50 profit. The guy says it really lowered his pyro readings, though.



I havent had the cash or time to really pursue a 2nd Gen IC- I know it will fit with some more holes for the end tubes. I think a good used 2nd Gen would be the most cost effective way to go. If you are after all-out performance, go custom; get one a little narrower than a 3rd Gen (2in or so), and have it built to the same heght.

Dan I went as wide as I could (39?)to squeeze it between the main rad/int support. The one I have is also 15" tall by 3" thick. I'll try to get some pics up by the end of the week.

of course i will have to swiss cheese the front end to get air to it and i am not taking about going behind the headlight, but pretty much right up to the bucket for it



i am not going for all out performance, but rather all out performance for towing



i would like it to haul butt empty too



then again, this is a manual trans truck and you can not shift it quickly with out hurting the trans

i dont exactly know...



broke a tooth off of 5th out and my buddy that owns a transmission shop and helped me rebuild it said it was from shifting it too quickly



and just judging by the feel of it, it does not like to be shifted quickly
