I am installing two two-way radios in my truck, and am wondering what the recommended way to tap into the under-hood power distribution box would be. The lid is flanged and I don't want to risk letting water and dirt enter there.

I agree with BGlidewell above. The Painless Wiring Kits include a factory style fuse panel for modern slide in fuses that can be mounted underhood(the exterior version) or underdash. With one of them you can add seven circuits without butchering your truck's electrical system.

With a PWK you obtain power for the fuse panel off the hot side of the driver's side battery routed via large wire and a circuit breaker. Makes a professional job.

Thanks, fellas, I'll check that out. I guess I was just being pig-headed, I looked in the factory box and saw several slots labeled as spare or empty, and really couldn't see a sanitary way to get in there.

If you are installing a High powered Radio, best to wire directly
to the battery ( Through a RV Battery relay ). Also ground at the battery.
Helps Keep Voltage Spikes out of the rest of the electrical circuits.
Also a good idea for cb's. .

there is a tsb for that

i'd say +&- directly to batt and if you want to switch w/inigition use a relay our co. radios at work suck in thet pickups but work great in the equipment pickups are wired to the back of the alt.

Gotta love mine electricions

Ryecreek, do you work for Phelps-Dodge? A friend of mine's son had a field service business in Nevada and is trying to find work in AZ, and move here. The Bagdad mine is about an hour or so from here.
