What exactly is tapping the pump wire? From what I understand, adding any box is tepping the wire, but I wanted to clearify some things. I have heard that some pumps don't mind it and some will die in a matter of minutes. What does tapping it do? Is there a way to tell if the pump is good or bad? I read this on the Edge Website about their comp box:

Power Level 1 on the Comp is the same as the EZ; on Power Levels 2-5 additional power is added via the wire tap onto the injection pump. If the pump wire is not attached with a Comp, Levels 2-5 are still operational, but the power gain is not any higher than Level 1. Under this scenario, however, power will come on much earlier in the throttle.

What do they mean by attaching the pump wire? Is attaching the pump wire considered tapping it?

Thanks

Tapping the wire would mean the same as attaching the wire. Most people who tap the wire never have a problem, I am one of those. What it does is adds a second pulse of fuel (I think) which gives a big increase in power. If you want night and day difference in power you will have to tap the wire. Oh and if you have any warranty left on the vehicle you will void it as far as the VP44 is concerned.

Since I own the Edge Comp, I will try to explain using it as an example. The Comp was designed to allow the user to control fueling at low boost (<10 psi) as well as high boost (>10 psi). However, if the user decides to not connect the Comp to the pump wire ("tap the pump wire"), then he has no control of fueling at low boost while still being able to adjust fueling at high boost.

The reason that some do not "tap the pump wire" is because it forces the pump to work harder, and thus potentially reduce reliability. I (and many others) HAVE tapped the pump wire without any negative effects. The unfortunate ones have seen damage that COULD have been caused by tapping the pump wire.

In short, tapping the pump wire means connecting the Comp to the fuel injection pump. Whether or not this action reduces YOUR pump's reliability really depends on that particular pump.

There is not rime or reason to which VP44's will die. It happens more frequently on the earilier 2nd gens (98. 5 - 2000) than the later ones. Some die within 10 minutes of being hooked up, most get a fairly long life before they go TU, and a few last forever. There is no pattern, no model numbers better than others, no pattern of use before, or during that kills them. Just a roll of the dice. It's a $1400 bet that I am not quite willing to make. Odds are I will be OK, but I have no safety net.

Edge Comp

Edge Drag Comp

TST

VA

Blue Chip

Diesel Dynamics and Bully Dog (both pretty much rebadged Edge Comps)

Power Puck (plugs into harness rather than tapping the pump wire - VOIDS just the same)

These are most of the ones that do the super enhanced fueling.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I am new to 24v's and this site is a big help. Is the FASS system worth the money? Will it possibly help save the VP? Also, with the FASS system, is a pusher pump needed to aid in fueling? THanks.

John

If you have a FASS than you don't need a pusher pump. The FASS will pump and flow all the fuel and pressur you will need to keep your VP44 happy.
