In the "Other" forum, there is a post about Driving to Alaska & in that forum, a member posted that driving across the border, into Can. , if you have 'extra' fuel, on board, you will be taxed by the Canadians.

Many of you have driven up to AK. from the lower 48 & many of those have auxillary fuel tanks, on board, or haul extra fuel in jugs. Have any of you been required to pay a Fuel Tax for the "extra" fuel you carried across the border?

I have a 115 gal. aux. tank & was wondering if I will have to pay that Can. Fuel Tax. If so, would it be better to just run the aux. tank empty into CAN. , since you will be paying US. fuel taxes & CAN. fuel taxes, if this is true.

I crossed the border, into CAN. @ Detroit, MI. back in '05 & did not have any problem with the aux. tank. I wonder if I just got lucky, on that trip, or is this taxation a recent change in CAN. tax laws?

Thanks for the advice.

I have delivered a couple dozen RVs into Canada (B. C and AB), the farthest was to Edmonton. I've never bought fuel up there because of my aux tank and never been taxed, or even asked.

GAmes,

Thanks for your reply.

I had never heard of this myself, either. But, I'd like to know in advance if this is a concern.

Sure would be a shame if the aux. tank was rendered useless by double taxation.

Buffalo: My adopted dad in Montana used to go to Hyder AK every summer, he had his boat up there. Would take fuel for the boat up in containers, The canadian folks would hassle him crossing the border until he could prove the fuel would be used in Alaska. his truck was diesel, the boat gas.

So depends on who you see IMO

I second GAmes' comment. Gary and I are friends and fellow transporters. I've also delivered a couple of dozen new travel trailers and fifth wheel trailers into BC, AB, and SK. I have a 70 gallon Transfer Flow tank and don't normally buy fuel in CN either.

My wife and I made a private trip to Halifax, NS recently pulling our own 5er. No one has ever mentioned the fuel tank or fuel tax. Maybe the issue has come up if the driver was carrying portable fuel containers in his pickup bed. That could raise the suspicion that the fuel was being transported for resale or for use by a local Canadian citizen.

Glad to hear the Canadian folks do not hassle Rv's with aux tanks, I have never taken ours into Canada because I did/do not want to hassle with our own Border folks coming back into the states, it's bad enough with just your truck!

My adopted dad carried his boat fuel in jerry cans.

We're in Canada at least 2 times a month... each of my trucks has a 130 gal bed tank and our larger Navstar has 2 90 gal saddle tanks... . we've never been asked about the fuel... we have had the tanks dipped at some of the weight stations looking for dyed fuel...

2 weeks ago if you entered into Saskatchewan at North Portal the Sask. govt. had their fuel police at the border. Any slip tank or on deck tank that carried 200 litres / 50 us gal. or more was fined $300. 00. Cheap ba$tard$ want to make sure you have to buy fuel in Sask.

I have run about 10 trailers up there over the past 2. 5 years (SK, AB, BC, ON) with a 115 gal. tank. I have crossed at North Portal and Sweet Grass mainly and never had a problem. I guess I have only crossed at Sweet Grass though with the tank as I didn't have it for the first 9 months of the job. I just quit transporting at the end of June. Back when I was getting the tank I heard something about getting taxed on whatever fuel you brought in but no one ever said anything.

The guy who used to book my horses used to make 1 Alaska trip a year. He said that they hassled him about it once. I don't remember the details, and he won't talk to me since I quit him and started my own comany, LOL.
