If you are a Calif. resident and purchase a truck camper in Oregon are you required to pay taxes? Called DMV today and she told me they do not register campers because it is not a motorized vehicle and your truck is registered and that is what uses it on the road. I'm sure there are other people out there in the same situation, is that it? Do I just use my camper and not worry about anything else or what?

That is true to the best of my knowledge. However, if you have out of State plates and then register your truck in Calif. they will requir you to get a certified weight cert. Calif now charges a weight fee on pickups.

Just registered mine in calif and have to pay 175$ in weight fees in addition to there ovber priced license fee.

Quess they need the money so they can keep up with the San Francisco weddings.

If you are talking about slide in campers I don't believe DMV has anything to do with them, they are not vehicles and are not governed by registration. So with that, I'd say heck yes, buy it out of state!~

As far as the weight fee goes, that happens regardless. You can get around the wieght fee by getting non-commercial plates- the only requirement is a permanently attached camper shell- or (I may be wrong) camper. Someone else will know for sure or I can look it up in the book.

Kev is correct. Weight fees are included in your registration. Slide-in campers are not registered--be sure to insure them though (you'll be surprised how cheap it is as it is considered part of the truck).

CA has been charging weight fees on pick-ups (and el caminos, rancheros and brats) for as long as I can remember.....

A Camper shell does not qualify as permanently attached living quarters for non-commercial registration. It must be permanently attached (not bolted on like a shell) and have a toilet & cooking apparatus. I've tried to register my trucks non-commercial, it's really a house car registration, and even I can't convince myself that a shell qualifies.

I'm not trying to find out about my trucks registration, it's my slide in camper. Taxes and registration when buying in Oregon on a truck slide in camper

Try calling a Oregon trailer sales place and ask. I have bought alot of stuff in Oregon and never paid any tax. This would also be a great time to buy tires tax free. I do it all the time. The people in Oregon don't seem to care where your from or what Lic. plate you have. And most are pretty nice as long as you don't stay too long or plan on relocating.
