I need some help with the often talked about switch (mystery?). I searched the forums but cannot find any info on which wire(s) to tie in to. Does anybody know?

BTW I am talking about a 48RE in a '04 CTD.

Thanks in advance.

I just can't believe it. So many members and not a single answer!

I just tried towing my 10,000lbs trailer up a steep (8%) winding road. Not very encouraging. I need to be able to lock-up for these extreme situations. Is there any HELP?

Thank you.

If you go TST"s web site they have instrutions on how to do it.

You basically put a wire tap or connecter on the orange wire with black tracer. It's pin connecter #B11. Its in the middle set of connecter of wires on the ECM which is on the fire wall of the engine compartment on passenger side. Be careful because there are two orange with black tracer wires. You have to unplug the wire harness from the ECM and look at the end to see which is B11. You dont cut this wire! only connect into it. Then you run your connecter wire to a switch in the cab (your choice of switch type) The other side of the switch to a ground NOT A POWER SOURCE! You now have to put a jumper wire in where the trans relay is (the fuse box is in the engine compartment driver side) its relay #59. You use a short piece of wire with a male spade connecter on each end ( you'll have to grind the sides of the spade connecter so it will fit into the terminal slots) The # of the slots that you push the spade connecters into are #30 and #87. You can look at the bottom of your relay and it will tell you the #'s of the relay terminals. You now can engage the convertor lock-up when ever you want. Be it known that if you cycle your key 3 times it will shoe a code #0700, dont worry. It doesent throw a check engine light, its only asking for one because it doesent understand whats up because the other parts of the relay are not plugged in and doesent need to be with the jumper wire in. Hope this helps.

Lockup will help but it is not the solution,The stock TC cannot take lockup for long when under extreme stress in high torque low rpm situation's. The weak link in in the 47/48RE is TC and VB. If you try and run TC and it fails you will contaminate the whole transmission,It will cost A LOT MORE than to up grade the TC & VB with a commander. Once you upgrade these, the 47/48RE are capable of handling 800 lbs of torque and 390 hp with longevity and durability

Twest, the valve body of the 48RE is the one to have over the 47RE. Yes it needs re-calibrated but it has as much line pressure stock as do alot of the 47RE valvebodys that have been modified for more line pressure. Make sure that when you get a new valvebody from who-ever that you get a 48RE back!

Hi Twest, sorry for being ignorant, but what is a "Commander" please and who makes it?

Thank you for your assistance:(:(

It is a module that controls the lockup of your TC, I like the triplelok from ATS it is very operator friendly,t ,The 48re is not a new or redesign model DC has added a few internal parts. Examples if you had four gears and added one more,if the new gear help the other four than you would have a stronger transmission, but if you added one and all it does is it is just one more were is the benefit. Why add things,it may improve longevity. It still has the same weak links the 47re had VB/TC.

Reverse is much better in the 48re,Now concerning the line pressure if you turn it up without a upgrade VB you have just increase pressure only, if you increase the line pressure with out changing the switch valve or the separator plate were is the benefit just higher pressure. Naming only two areas.

Line pressure is critical! but everthing else has to go hand in hand to work together. I agree that a modified valvebody and convertor are needed too. DTT has what is called the Smart Controller. I have one on my truck and it works AWSOME!

Check manuals for 47RE & 48RE ,line pressure,throttle pressure,governor pressure,converter pressure,accumulator pressure,servo pressure,Though out the entire shift band are similar or exact,their is not precise figures,allowable tolerance's are acceptable.

I opened my hood intending to install a mystery switch and could not locate the ECM. It was not located on the passenger side as my 02 was. Any suggestions would be helpful.

You need to find the PCM. The ECM is on the driver side on the engine. I have not looked at an 04 yet but the PCM should be on the firewall on passenger side? I will check today.
