I am looking for advice on replacing my TC myself. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but have never done this type of work. Any help on how tough it is and also what brand you recommend would surely help.

There are plenty of options for manufacturers of aftermarket converters. Just browse the web-site, and you choose.

As for doing it yourself, you will need a hand, as well as a frame spreader in order to drop crossmember. Take down transfer case separate. Gets way too heavy. You will need jacks/lift would be better.

I have researched, and will do my own shortly. Can't speak from experience, just feedback. I hear it will run you around $500 to have done. Might be worth the hassel.

Jerry,Im no trying to shy you away from, the job,but if you plan on towing a lot of weight,or turning up the power, then this is the time to upgrade the 3rd gr clutch, and the seals. Call Bill K tollfree 1-866-504-4002 and he'll help you determine what you need, and help you with install advice. he walked me thru my first one, easily. I did my own installs,I did some internal upgrades as well,if your going to have the unit out,it is the time to upgrade it.

Changing a TC is not that hard, nor is it too technical. I would recommend that if you are going to do it yourself that you buy a factory service manual to guide you through. Plan on a whole day although it will likely only take 5-6 hours if you are not rushing. The FSM can answer your questions when everyone is closed on sunday too.

I will agree with snowman too, in that if you have it out upgrading the clutches and band strut ETC is not very hard, and is a lot cheaper than you would think too. Even if you stay at stock power it would be worth it to me. Bill K is very helpful on the phone, as is Don Ramer at ATS and Dave Goerend at Goerend Brothers. I have not talked to BD about transmission tech help, so I do not know how they are in that regard. If you have it out you might as well do the little things that could save you the hassle later.

As far as brand recommendation goes I will warn you that the really tight TC's (as in the DTT, and the new BD) will have a lot of lag off the line with stock power levels. To me it is too much, but it is my opinion only. If you are staying stock I would recommend that you go with one of the quality milled stator convertors like ones you can get from Goerend or ATS. If you plan to upgrade the power as well it would open up a lot more possibilities IMO. With more power the DTT and the BD 7X convertors really shine, as does the ATS triplelock. There is a lot of information that you can get out of the search on auto trannies, but there is also a lot of extraneous BS that you will have wade through to get it. Do a search and see what you find, then call the companies that you want to know more about. Hope this helps.
