Just did a radiator renew/repair,a new battery(950cca interstate)old one was a 750cca and was 5 years old!Valve adjust by the book, new throttle linkage ball sockets. Spent more time on the damn timing cover plunger then all of the above. It wouldst budge and when it did the whole little deal came out with the star washer thing!never got it to move freely but finally felt the slight drop it made in the tdc hole. Took forever to get damn star washer back in. I don't get the impression that the plunger would just fall out even without star washer??

It wont fall out

DPKetchum,

I have had 3 trucks with no keeper washer in the TDC housing, and had no problems. I tore the timing pin in half on the 4x4 I have now, because I didnt know about the keeper ring. I normally take the pin out and put my finger in the hole as I turn the engine, and when I feel the hole under my finger, I back it up a tad, and put the pin back in, then the pin just pops in as the engine reaches TDC. Sometimes, I have trouble getting the pin to pop into the hole sometimes. DOnt know why.

Thanks for info. Thats what i was worried about. The pin never really fell into a hole, felt like a subtle drop?Luckily my harmonic balancer was painted and marked several years ago by a tech i worked with. Once i figured out his painted red striped etc. I assumed from shop manual etc it actually dropped into a HOLE and would move kinda easy, which wasn't the case!I was trying to get plunger to move in any direction and had pliers on it and pried with a screwdriver and all of a sudden whole thing popped out. Kinda got keeper back in which was a pain, was worried about it vibrating loose and falling out. Kinda thought it wouldn't due to it never really moved either way just by hand.
