The site redesign has been scheduled to go live on June 1st. I was told that the chat will not be turned on at all times. Instead, it will be turned on at special times for TDR subscribers only, featuring guest speakers.

God forbid, we might talk about off topic stuff, or perhaps even things that annoy management.

I guess thats how the "grown-ups" that don't like the newsgroup mentality do it.

BTW, there is a chat available on the Alt. Autos. Dodge. Trucks newsgroup site
www.AADT. cc

Usually has someone there on late sunday evenings. Although lately we seem to be wandering over to the jeep chat from www.hardcorejeep.com Even so, the chat IS there, and can be used by anyone. If you want to access it without the site, the software is mIRC, and the chan is "#aadt".

Management is not concerned with being "annoyed" by chat topics. Mud-slinging does not win discussions.

This issue was decided from a support standpoint. TDR does not have the resources to monitor chat server software to make sure its up and running continually. Chat server software is notorious for crashing after extended use, having memory leaks and eating up system resources. With over 200 e-mails per day already, the last thing I need is to be flooded with "the chat server is down!" e-mails. Nor do we have the time nor the desire to deal with and track down complaints that will occur when someone gets abusive (and it will happen).

That's only true when MGM is there!!!

Hey MGM, I can see why ya poke this guy in the ribs, its almost too much fun.

Ken, management has in the past tried to smother topics which were not "politically approved" by said management. Further, management has had more than one inappropriate reaction to several different situations. Thus it is not a stretch to prove, let alone think, that management might be keeping the reins well in hand.

As to mudslinging, its clear to me that certain individuals are accorded more leeway in that arena than others. So be it. However, to reply to me referring to "mudslinging" when others are clearly over the line and receive little or no discipline is a bit like the pot calling the kettle black.

While the technical problems with chat server/software may be a reality, they and the other difficulties are what I would term "part of the job. " I get almost 100 emails a day, and I have a working delete key. Thats part of being online and connected to resources. Running a site means you will get significant notification of failures, just as the power company gets hundreds/thousands of calls notifying them of a failure. Its part of the job.

In short, deal with it. Limiting site features may be a viable way to deal with it, but it is not a productive method of improving the website overall. To wit: How many of us use improvements on our trucks only when the manufacturer feels its a good time to do so? Its not much of an improvement that way, is it?

Do what ya want, ya will anyway.

Thank you for your feedback. It has been noted and filed.

The chat engine will remain a part-time feature when the new version of the site is launched June 1.

What are you hinting at PW?

A few of the local chapters have chats, why bog up this site with them?
They are confusing and slow enough with 10-15 guys talking, how about 7000?
