Hey all, BIG, just as you were typing the above, I was out with the family getting some frozen yogurt. The first happy thing I've done with my clan since this started. Attached is a picture from the closest station to my house. All along, I've been trying to explain how Diesel is generally more available than Gasoline in a crisis. I finally drove my point...

Anyway, since FEMA has finally set up shop and is letting some dough loose, some private outfits are coming forward to help in the cleanup, but it's almost a total DSNY, NYCDOT operation, and our equipment is getting a real workout. Not so much the garbage trucks, but the FEL's, sweepers and dumps are hurting. Were going through hydraulic hose by the spool. We just keep turning wrenches. Fastenal just let loose a whole TT full of pails, rakes and brooms. My glancing estimate is 1000 each. Our garage has about 150 Sanit men and almost the same pieces of EQ in it. In the last few days, we've doubled men and EQ from all over the city... They're saying the temps will hit 70* this weekend. We press forth!!!

I can't believe the media are not reporting how poor the response was in NY. No Red Cross in Staten Island for 4 days. Parts of Long Island won't have power until Thanksgiving. They don't have enough replacement poles to hang wire. Power was restored in 1 neighborhood, but the switch wasn't thrown for almost a week. These people should thank God for the private donations arriving daily. If they only had the Govt, they would all freeze in the dark.

Jhenderson. It's the private concerns who are holding back. The donations are from all over and very Abundant. The media is reporting its just not mainstream and they're not reporting the WHOLE truth. The governor talks like a commie and he's all over LIPA for running out of poles and their poor performance. The only private outfits that are shining are the from out of town utilities that working their axes off like (I'm sure) member TRAMPLINEMAN. The Red Cross is here and doing the best they can. Mayor Bloombag doesn't want the national guard here because they carry guns. Yes that's true. He went on to say that we have enough problems with guns and don't need more guns around here. Also, the USMC is here. Their presence is well known.

Cuomo has some balls criticizing LIPA. It was his father's creation as a condition of cutting up the completed and tested Shoreham nuclear plant. Ratepayers are still paying the 30 year note for that fiasco.

I never knew that. I'm a bit young to know. Anyway cuomo just talks like a typical NY politician. I'm not saying NJ is better but when you see Gov Christie on tv he speaks well to his people. I don't want this turning into a political thread and attracting HB's n stuff. Pepole on LI pay HUGE taxes and should be better served.

I saw a sign on FEMA's field office door, " closed due to the weather" I think that says it all. I posted in an earlier thread, the people from National Grid have no communication. The folks on the ground are good, but they need leadership. Management is terrible. I would guess that is the same problem in NY. Public utilities are the next thing to Govt as far as I'm concerned. No accountability, and you can't go elsewhere for service.

I heard a couple of sides to this FEMA thing. One side is that all their tents were blown away during the second storm. They had to run for cover themselves. It's true. In the case of being in a dense city you are reliant on your government. That's how I make my living.

This is easily explained..... When katrina happened and fema imploded like it did, they could blame Bush. Since this is under the kenyan's watch, they are, as expected, leaving it alone.

Does anyone besides me wonder if all the damaged refrigerators, freezers, and AC units are properly recycled? What do all the greenies who brought us R134 and now Y1234 think about releasing all that R12 and 22 into the atmosphere?

Wayne. I mean no disrespect to the people trying their best. I'm only pointing out the waste and confusion that comes from central planning. We had a fellow leaving RI with a food truck today. He has been collecting donations for the trip. I expect him to provide more hot meals to those in need than any 10 FEEMA employees. We also had a local bargain outfit (Job Lot) head out with a trailer load of winter clothing. All this at no cost to the taxpayer. Just people helping people. Meanwhile, back here, the state has been forced by FEEMA to haul truck loads of wood chips 30 miles ,1 way to be weighed for reimbursement for storm clean up. How much wasted money is that? All to chase a few federal $.

In New York City, the department of sanitation has a CFC recycling unit. It's a fleet of short Wb Sprinters dedicated to recovering CFC's. in NYC whenever you want to trash any device with those gasses, you call 311 and put it at the curb. A CFC van will come by and suck it down. At that time they put a sticker on the unit and refer it to the recycling truck on that route. The unit is then eaten by the Heil 4060 bodied Mack. It's a busy detail. I'm not positive about what happens to the recovered gasses.

Thanks BIG. It's been a long rip. no sign of letting up. The blizzards of 2010 and 1996 lasted a couple of weeks. I think this will go way past. They're not allowing any time unless you're sick or have a funeral to attend. A piece of that beach scene is looking mighty good right about now. Lol.

Indeed the bigger the operation, the more confusion. You'd think FEMA would be more organized. I see special placards in trucks. Seems they are directing the debris here also. Prolly for the same reason.

A customer who Cape Canaveral (Kenndey Space center) as a refrigeration/ac man said they use old refrigerant to clean rocket/space shuttle parts. (He had retired form there after 25 years and he was putting a new unit on my cooler when I told him my former refrigeration man told me that I needed to have my Mule's A/C checked because r134a wore out. That's when he told me refrigerant did not ware out it leaked out. By the way I never had to ad refrigerant to the Mule until I had the compressor changed out this year. )
