Just finished memorizing issue 29. Jim Anderson says that there is a pre fuel- filter, filter which should be cleaned every 40K miles. I haven't crawled under yet. Anyone done this?

There are actually two prefilters, one in the fuel tank module the other in the fuel heater. I've checked mine twice in the last 114k miles-not a speck on them. Dodge dealer wanted $180 to clean the tank screen, said that was the reason my truck was running poorly,I knew it was the lift pump so I let them do it. No charge when they found it clean and replaced lift pump under warrenty.

THX for the post, I meant to bring this up and see if anyone had gained anything from cleaning the stainer... other than grime under their finger nails and a sore back.

Good Post!

Two prefilters? Incredible that there's no mention in the maintenance manual! What are they designed to filter - rocks? I'm gonna check the accesable one but sure don't intend to remove the fuel tank - and it's the first one! I don't like this!

The tank filter(screen) is actualy very fine, maybe 3 1/2-4 inches in dia. I think the sloshing of fuel in the tank probibly keeps it clean. I wouldn't check it unless you need to pull the module for sender or pickup problems, which seem to happen all to often. I'm pretty sure the repair manual discusses it in the fuel system section.

The fuel tank prefilter gets cleaned automatically when you replace the fuel tank sender, which seems to be about every 4 years or 75,000 miles! #ad

I crawled under my truck today and followed the fuel line from the tank to the regular filter and couldn't fine any other filter in between. Am I just too dumb to be driving a Diesel?

Tom,

The prefilter screen Jim Anderson is talking about is a screen on the 12 valve trucks with the mechanical lift pumps. The pump on your truck is electric if your truck is a 24 valve.

Yes, I have seen the screen in the fuel tank stop up with dirty fuel that has algae in it. This screen is sometimes referred to as the fuel sock in the tank. That's why it is important to buy clean fuel from a reputable dealer that sells in big volumes.

Thanks Bill - The TDR article by Anderson only said that the filter has been on since 94. Can't even believe what's in print anymore!
