Milestone License Plate Problem

Friends,

I've become quite interested in reading news, updates, etc via RSS feeds. I'm wondering if there is any interest by the powers-that-be to implement this on the TDR. vBulliten does evidently support it in a couple of different versions. Here's a link to thier site, and some search results that I found: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/search.php?searchid=322716

Here's some infor about "Really Simple Syndication (RSS for short) http://webdesign. about.com/cs/rss/a/aa052603a.htm

This technology is really catching on. I'd like to see TDR adopt it. I would be glad to help in any way that I can.

Thanks,
Andy

It's been brought up before but thus far I haven't been able to figure out how we'd use it. Your search above doesn't work because current versions of vB only save your search for about 15 minutes. What would you envision us putting into an rss news feed? We could do the front page news items but there's only a couple items a months added there. I don't see how we could possibly do anything from the forums with ~800 new posts a day. What do you envision we'd put into it?

Well, I hadn't exactly thought that through it appears. I didn't realize we were averaging around 800 posts a day.

Off the top of my head, content could be limited to new "headers" in a certain topic? For example, I could subscribe to feeds only related to the 3rd Generation section? Feeds could be provided for each of the three MAJOR sections, and be limited to ONLY new topic headers. Does that make sense? From what I read, RSS is robust enough to provide that functionality. How much traffic do you think that would generate?

I will do more leg work, and see what I can come up with. If it adds no value, then I'll certainly drop it. The rollout of TDRLite is what got me thinking about it.

Thanks for the reply Steve, and the willingness to explore this.

I think a cool feature would be to have a choice to feed only new threads. And if it's possible when we subscribe to a thread we could have an option to get e-mail notification or a rss feed.

We'll be moving to a new version of vB in a little while and I'll look at this then. That version has rss feeds built right in. To be honest though I still think that it won't be that usable with the number of posts we have each day. Even if you just fed brand new threads into it your looking at between 60 to 100 new threads each day. New posts your talking about between 600 to 1200 each day.
