After sifting through the archives,I think I'm going to give his fix a try. It uses Standard Transmission's Nut#1875@300 ft/lbs w/loctite and staking with a 3/16 punch and a BFH. Anyone else had success with this fix?He says his has worked for over 400k mostly towing. I'd say its a good fix. Thanks for any comments.
 
I tried that fix and it came loose after about 5000 miles. We put the nut on as tight as it would go with a 1" impact wrench and then drove it around another 1/8" of a turn with a dull chisel and big hammer. I found that when I staked the nut with a big center punch and a big hammer that the dimple did not go deep enough into the shaft to be effective and I really laid into it too. You need to hit the lip on the nut out close to the edge to get the shaft also and I think thats why mine came off. New mainshaft (full splined) and gear and I hope this crapola is done with.

I fixed mine that way and it held very well but I ran it only about 6000 miles before I went to a 6-speed. I tore the trany down to inspect it and do some work on it and I will tell you that nut was VERY hard to get off even with heat. Here http://www.pbase.com/mark1974/truck are pictures of the job and some descriptions. I even put loctite under the gear and believe it or not it had not pulverized like I thought it would. The gear was also real hard to pull off even though the press fit was worn out and just slid on. I would do this again if it was needed because I feel it works if done right. I didn't have the money at the time to do it right anyway.
